Sony Ericsson drops another CES teaser, looking like an Xperia Arc follow-up

Sony Ericsson teaser

Sony Ericsson just dropped this little teaser pic onto its Facebook page, and astute readers are noting that, among other things, the camera button appears to be pointing us in the direction of a successor to the Xperia Arc. (Read our full review) Of course, anything that comes out after the Xperia Arc is an Xperia Arc successor, and SE's had not qualms about borrowing features from phone to phone.

But we digress. We should find out soon enough next week at CES 2012 in Las Vegas. Join us, won't ya?

Dolphins begin search for new coach

Mike Nolan decided against buying a place to live when he came to town two years ago as defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.

"I'm a renter now," Nolan said with a laugh. "It's a complete change in philosophy. I think renting's the way to go nowadays."

He made a good call. The Dolphins face an offseason of big changes, and a lot of players and assistant coaches will be moving on.

General manager Jeff Ireland confirmed Monday that he and owner Stephen Ross have begun their search for a head coach. Tony Sparano was fired Dec. 12, and interim coach Todd Bowles is a long shot for the job. A front-runner has yet to surface.

"Steve Ross and I have a plan in place that is designated to ensure that we identify and interview an outstanding set of candidates for the head coaching position," Ireland said in a statement. "That search has begun and there is no designated timetable. ... Steve and I are excited to embark on this process, and we are confident that it will result in the selection of an outstanding individual who will return the Dolphins to their longtime status as one of the most successful teams in the league."

The status of the franchise has declined dramatically in recent years. The Dolphins have reached the playoffs only once in the past decade, and they've endured three consecutive losing seasons for the first time since the 1960s.

This season Miami lost its first seven games, then played much better and beat the New York Jets on Sunday to finish 6-10.

"Our ultimate goal was to make it into the playoffs and make some noise there, so that's disappointing," Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall said. "Hopefully we can take some of this momentum we've had in this second half and run into next year flying."

It's unclear whether the Dolphins want to hire a college coach, an NFL coordinator or someone with head-coaching experience in the league. Ross is drawn to celebrities and apparently willing to spend big, but competition will be stiff thanks to a slew of vacancies around the league.

Some of those situations are more appealing than the Dolphins, who have been plagued by instability. The next coach will be Miami's seventh since the start of the 2004 season.

The ongoing search for a franchise quarterback is another issue. Newcomer Matt Moore played well after Chad Henne was sidelined by a season-ending right shoulder injury, but with a top-10 pick in the April draft, Miami will be tempted to draft a QB.

Henne, a free agent this offseason, said Monday his shoulder is healing well and he would like to remain with the Dolphins. Given Moore's emergence, that's unlikely.

"I love being down here, and hopefully I get another opportunity," Henne said. "If not, I'll try my luck elsewhere. Obviously I want to be a starter, and I feel I can be in this league."

Heading for retirement is NFL active sack leader Jason Taylor, who decided to call it quits rather than try to break in yet another new coach. Among those certain to return is Reggie Bush, who reached the 1,000-yard rushing milestone for the first time in his first season with Miami.

The Dolphins had trouble with pass protection and pass coverage. Blowing late leads and losing close games became bad habits. Those issues will all be addressed by a new coach, but Bush believes the team needs only few tweaks, not major renovations.

"The chemistry is there. The foundation is laid out," Bush said. "I think whatever coach they bring in will fit right in, and I think we'll be fine."

Perhaps. But the next coach might want to try renting.

Darwin, Murphy and Windows 8?

?

?Whaaaaat??, you must be asking yourself as you read the title. Hopefully, it?ll suck you in to read the article.

Darwin proposed several mechanisms to explain the diversity of life as he observed it and his travels sought the evidence for them. Had he and Mendel been contemporaneous? well. He proposed ?Descent with Modification? and its main causative mechanism, ?Natural Selection? (NS). Well, Darwin came before antibiotics, antivirals and Windows 8.

Parallel to ?Natural Selection? is ?Artificial Selection? (AS, to save me typing) which is employed by man to shape everything from bacteria to offspring. NS (consumer selection of software) and AS (targeting software vulnerabilities by hackers) go on in the world of computers.

Windows 8 has been created by MS to improve the OS and to improve kernel security (among other stuff like making money).

Will it do that? One only has to look to Darwin and Murphy for the answer. I deliberately mentioned antibiotics. They exert a pressure against germs (wide spectrum, against many types and narrow spectrum, against a few). Germs respond by dying, and when the drug level is inadequate to kill (dosage, frequency and duration) they are given time to find any ?work arounds? they have up their sleeves, or to communicate with those which have and incorporate those mechanisms.

  1. Because of the "Struggle for Existence", few offspring survive to reproduce
  2. Any heritable variation that improves an individual's ability to survive and reproduce (i.e., its "Fitness") will tend to be passed on to the next generation:? "Natural Selection"

Murphy?s Law: ?That which can go wrong, will.?

By improving kernel security, MS has exerted tremendous pressure against ordinary malware (not phishing, vishing, etc.). So?

So, McAfee Labs has predicted a paradigm shift for attacks on OS attacks against Windows 8, but this shift will ?evolve and differentiate? to encompass other OS?s.

?In the coming year as developers and researchers develop new methods for rooting phones, we will see malware authors adapting the lessons of PC malware development to undertake attacks that leverage the mobile hardware layer to a greater extent. PC-based malware is increasingly moving further ?down? the operating system (OS) to take greater advantage of hardware; we expect mobile malware to follow the same direction.? ? McAfee Labs, per Neowin.net

Let?s break that down: According to John Callaham at Neowin.net, McAfee is predicting that Rootkits and Bootkits will be the new areas of attack in 2012. McAfee?s full report is really worth reading.

?Information security always involves give and take, with equal amounts of measures and countermeasures thrown in. The attackers write malicious code; we counter it. Operating system vendors bake security into the core of the OS; attackers find a way to circumvent. This is a natural part of the dynamic threat landscape and will never go away. But will advances by the information security
industry and operating system vendors drive malware writers outside the OS to directly attack hardware?

Recent versions of Windows have included data-execution protection as well as address-space layout and randomization. These security methods make it harder for attackers to compromise a victim?s machine. Encryption technologies have also boosted OS protection in recent years. As with most internal OS security measures, attackers very quickly found ways to evade them. With the upcoming release of Windows 8, Microsoft will include many new security features: secure password storage, secure boot functions, antimalware defenses, and even enhanced reputation capabilities. Where will this new security architecture drive attackers?

The answer is ?down and out?: down into hardware and out of the operating system.

During the last several years McAfee Labs has seen great advances from attackers and malware writers in both rootkits and bootkits. Rookits are used to subvert both the operating system and security software, while bootkits attack encryption and can replace legitimate boot loaders. These are advanced techniques to intercept encryption keys and passwords, and even subvert driver-signing defenses
employed by some OS?s.

Attacking hardware and firmware is not easy, but success there would allow attackers to create resistent malware ?images? in network cards, hard drives, and even system BIOS. We expect to see more effort put into hardware and firmware exploits and their related real-world attacks throughout 2012 and beyond.? ? McAfee Labs

Remember that backdoor way of attack via printers I wrote about here:

http://drjbhl.joeuser.com/article/413881/Are_Millions_of_Printers_and_other_devices_Open_to_Hacking

Not so ?far fetched? anymore? now think video cards, and the host of unprotected ?smart devices?you have which all communicate with each other.

By the way, HP has ?fixed? that printer software update vulnerability. Until the next one is found. Not bad mouthing HP. At least they fixed a problem. How many firms are acting proactively, though?

Rest in peace, Darwin and Murphy:? Deus and machina continue to prove your observations.

?

On caucus eve, Paul doesn't see himself president (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Republican Ron Paul, a leading contender in Iowa's presidential caucuses, said Monday on the eve of the leadoff 2012 vote that he does not envision himself in the White House.

The Texas congressman, near the top of the polls in Iowa, said the odds of him winning are slim and admitted that the path to the nomination was unclear without a strong performance in Iowa and the New Hampshire primary next week.

When asked Monday during an ABC News interview in Des Moines whether he sees himself in the Oval Office, Paul replied: "Not really, but I think it's a possibility."

He added: "I don't deceive myself. You know what the odds are. The odds have been slim."

Paul made the comments after a five-city blitz where he headlined large, enthusiastic crowds packed with younger voters, re-emerging in the state after spending two days out of Iowa at home in Texas while his rivals blanketed the state.

Campaigning with a son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., the libertarian-leaning Texan defended the 48-hour break, even as final polls published at the end of last week showed more than a third of likely caucus-goers undecided or willing to change their mind before the caucuses.

Paul expressed faith in his Iowa organization, a far more structured network than his 2008 Iowa campaign that helped him place fifth in Iowa four years ago.

"I don't want to sound over-confident, but I am confident in our organization," he said, arguing that other candidates were still scrambling to shore up their supporters. Paul has a robust staff in New Hampshire, and he began running ads in South Carolina, where the South's first primary is scheduled for Jan. 21.

Still, Paul was waiting until Friday to head to New Hampshire, where he is rising but far behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in polls.

Paul's confidence was buoyed Monday by big crowds in Des Moines, Davenport, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls and Mason City. Paul completed the circuit in a small chartered jet.

"We're optimistic and have our fingers crossed you're going to show up and do your job," Paul told about 200 people in Mason City, the final stop of the day.

Paul has a robust campaign organization in New Hampshire, which holds its primary Jan. 10, and begun airing ads in South Carolina, scheduled to vote on Jan. 21.

But he said he does not know how he will compete deeper into the nominating campaign.

"It will be a real challenge. There's no doubt," Paul told The Associated Press aboard the plane between Davenport and Cedar Rapids. "We've invested a lot of time and money in doing well here."

Still, Paul stoked the crowds along the way, railing equally against Democrats in Congress as he did against Republicans. At each stop, he criticized the Patriot Act as an abuse of civil liberties despite its support from his own party's leadership.

Paul has steadily gained ground in Iowa in the last two months. And while he narrowly trailed only Romney a series of polls published last week, support had leveled off in the wake of sharp attack over his opposition to preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon with a military strike.

It did not dissuade him from repeating in Davenport and Cedar Rapids a line that brought loud cheers in Des Moines. "Just listen to some of the candidates. They are willing to start bombing Iran right now. One thing is for certain, this country does not need another war," Paul told the crowd in Davenport, prompting loud cheers.

And while Paul himself steered clear of criticizing his rivals, his son Rand repeatedly struck at Santorum, who has supported foreign aid spending, a rallying point of opposition for fiscal hawks including tea party supporters.

"You've got so-called GOP candidates for president traipsing round Iowa who have voted for foreign aid," Rand Paul said to a cheering crowd of more than 300 in Cedar Rapids.

The campaign was preparing an automated call criticizing Santorum's support for foreign aid and other parts of the former senator's fiscal record.

Still, Paul said he was as much rallying a movement to change politics in America as he was campaigning for president.

"I don't know why you have to separate the two," he told ABC News.

Indian diplomat attacked in court by Chinese traders

BEIJING: An Indian diplomat was injured and hospitalised following an assault by a large group of Chinese traders in a court, as he tried to secure the release of two Indians who were held hostage by locals, demanding payment of their dues in the eastern business hub of Yiwu.

S Balachandran, a diplomat at the Indian Consulate in Shanghai was rushed to hospital when he fainted after being "manhandled" by the crowd that tried to snatch two kidnapped Indians who clung to him.

The incident happened when he was leaving the court after prolonged negotiations on the night of December 31.

The two Indians had been held hostage by the local traders for two weeks for non-payment of dues by their company, whose owner had allegedly fled the country.

Riva Ganguly Das, the Consul General of the Shanghai Consulate of India told PTI here that Balachandran, working as Consul at the Consulate fainted when he was "manhandled", while attempting to get the release of Deepak Raheja and Shyamsunder Agrawal.

Balachandran, 46, tried to negotiate for their release for over five hours at a court in Yiwu, a big trading centre for a host of commodities.

He was assaulted when the two Indians, being held captive for over fortnight clung on to him to leave the surcharged place. The incident took place in the court and in the presence of police and the judge.

A high drama ensued as the crowd prevented the two from going along with him demanding that they pay millions of Yuan owed to them for commodities purchased from them.

They later pounced on them and snatched the two from Balachandran, who in the process suffered injuries especially to his knee. A diabetes patient, Balanchandran fainted after the assault.

Balachandran was rushed to the local hospital in an ambulance in a semi-conscious state by local officials and some Indian traders based in Yiwu.

Local officials reportedly apologised to Balachandran after the incident.

Though the court said Deepak and Shayamsundar were free to go, they remained in police custody fearing attack by the crowd. They too suffered injuries in the incident.

Balachandran was admitted to a hospital in Shanghai yesterday where he is undergoing treatment for his injuries.

His condition was better and he is currently undergoing various tests, Das said.

The two Indians are lodged at a police station and the Consulate has appointed a lawyer to secure their release.

The two were held as captive after the owner of their company, Euro Global Trading, fled without paying the dues of local suppliers. The owner was stated to be a Yemeni or a Pakistani national.

The two Indians hailing from Mumbai say they were employees of the company but the local Chinese suppliers assert they will be released only after they pay the dues.

Their families were in touch with the Indian Consulate officials to obtain their release.

Over 100 Indian traders stay in Yiwu which is the centre of commodities trading.

Last year, Indian merchants bought over USD 15 billion worth of goods from the market.

Indians say such incidents are common in Yiwu as local suppliers target the traders whenever payments are not made.
