Holiday Card Spoofs Republican Candidates: Find The Funny Sends Rudolph GOP Parody (VIDEO)

Having played Andrew Jackson and next appearing as Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Walker knows a thing or two about off beat presidential-themed entertainment. Combine that with a wicked sense of humor and some talented friends, and you've got a bleakly funny new holiday card.

Walker, who featured on Broadway in "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson" and stars in the upcoming "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," is a member of a comedy troupe in New York City called Find the Funny. Though the weekly show the group puts on is on hold for now (or, was supposed to be on hold, as his next film, "Paradise Lost," is now running into production problems), that didn't stop them from sending out this GOP-parodying holiday card.

About a minute in, what seems like a sweet clip from "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" turns into a smorgasbord of GOP presidential candidate greatest hits, with the voices of Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain and Rick Perry substituted in for the words of some of the delightful little toys from Santa's workshop.

Happy Holidays, indeed.

Cantor Entertainment files for IPO of up to $100 million (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Gaming software maker Cantor Entertainment Technology Inc filed with U.S. regulators on Thursday to raise up to $100 million in an initial public offering of its Class A common stock.

The Nevada-based company told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in a preliminary prospectus that Cantor Fitzgerald & Co would underwrite the IPO.

The company said it would use the money from the offering to repay debt and plans to list its common stock on Nasdaq under the symbol "CETI."

The filing did not reveal how many shares the company planned to sell or their expected price.

The company, a unit of financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, owns the Hollywood Stock Exchange, an online game, where players use simulated money to buy and sell shares of actors, directors and other film-related options.

The amount of money a company says it plans to raise in its first IPO filings is used to calculate registration fees. The final size of the IPO could be different.

ESPN?s Matt Meyers Talks Writing and Baseball

You are here: Home / General / ESPN?s Matt Meyers Talks Writing and Baseball

ESPN has been on top of the sports news and broadcasting world for the better part of three decades. A major component of their success is their ability to attract and cultivate top-notch talent in all aspects of their operation. Between running a television channel, a highly trafficked website, and a magazine, ESPN produces a prodigious amount of content that is facilitated down through many levels of their staff.

Matt Meyers is one of the staff members that help keep the world updated on sports news on a minute-but-minute basis. Specifically, he acts as a gatekeeper for one of ESPN?s most popular offerings; their baseball coverage. Meyers is the baseball editor for ESPN Insider and ESPN The Magazine; working with many of the top writers and experts that the media giant employ. He is also a contributing writer himself, having covered both major league baseball and college basketball during his career.

Meyers had an eclectic background in sports journalism prior to his current role with ESPN; working for several other major sports sites/publications. Undoubtedly his diverse experience is extremely beneficial covering baseball, where there is something new coming out every day. There truly is no coverage that is as comprehensive as what is provided by ESPN, and Meyers and his colleagues are responsible for maintaining that reputation.

Recently I had the opportunity to ask Meyers some questions about his career and his thoughts on the evolving field of baseball journalism. Despite being in the thick of the baseball off-season, Meyers was gracious enough to provide me with some thought provoking answers.

Matt Meyers Interview:

How did you come to a career in sports writing/journalism?: I was always a passionate sports fan growing up, and this seemed like the natural path since I clearly wasn?t going to play professionally. I went to a small college in Maine (Bates College) where there were plenty of media opportunities, so I jumped right in. I was sports writer and editor on the paper, and called the football games on the radio. After college, I got a job as a freelance fact-checker at ESPN The Magazine, and worked my way up from there, with stops at Baseball America and CSTV (now CBS College Sports) along the way.

Can you please describe your job duties in your position with ESPN?: My primary role is as the baseball editor for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN Insider. I also handle the soccer content on ESPN Insider. For Insider, I am managing the day-to-day content for Keith Law, Jim Bowden and contributors such as Dan Szymborski and Dave Cameron. The Magazine is more big-picture stuff, where we are always looking ahead. For example, we are already talking about the MLB preview, which won?t run until March. I also write a weekly baseball column on Insider, which I really enjoy since I have a lot of freedom to write what I want.

What is a trend or void in coverage by sports media that you would like to see changed?: My biggest pet peeve about sports media coverage is that many writers decide a narrative before a game begins and stick to it regardless of what actually happened. A perfect example is Justin Verlander in the playoffs. He pitched fine, but he was by no means dominant. However, it seemed like a number of writers and TV commentators decided he was going to be the story no matter what he did, so we heard about how he ?battled? and was ?a warrior? when the only reason people said that is because the Tigers scored enough runs for him to get a couple of wins. The same kind of thing is happening with Tim Tebow. I wish coverage could be more nuanced and adaptable.

What are some things that aspiring sports writers and editors can do to get noticed?: I know it?s a clich?, but being persistent is key. You have to pitch and keep pitching, and not get discouraged if you get rejected (or ignored).

And if you are trying to get noticed, you should most certainly have a blog. Not only does it give you something to direct people to if they want to see your writing skills, but it allows you to develop.

In my experience you are better off trying to make that blog focused on one subject, and making yourself an expert on that subject, as opposed to trying to be a generalist who rants about all sports. It?s important to have a voice that makes you identifiable, but don?t try to be someone you?re not.

Blogs are a growing trend in ?media? coverage. How viable do you consider them to be in the world of sports journalism?: Considering I?ve already mentioned blogs, I think you can guess that I consider them viable. A lot of the best analysis out there is being done on blogs. I?m a big Mets and Knicks fan, and I probably read Amazin? Avenue (Mets) and Posting and Toasting (Knicks) more than I do any of the beat writers. It?s not that I think the beat writers are bad, it?s just that the blogs are not only entertaining, but they usually point out the most interesting stuff being written by the beat guys.

What is a dream project you would like to be able to work on?: That?s a really good question, and one that I?m not sure I know the answer to. I?ve always been fascinated by the MLB draft, and I would love to get an opportunity to sit inside a draft room, though I?m not sure readers would get as much of that as I would, since I doubt I?d be able to say that much about it.

Turkey-France ties fray over Armenia genocide bill (AP)

PARIS ? Ties between France and Turkey, strategic allies and trading partners, abruptly unraveled Thursday after French legislators passed a bill making it a crime to deny that the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks nearly a century ago constitute genocide.

The bill strikes at the heart of national honor in Turkey, which denies the genocide label and insists the 1915 massacres occurred during civil unrest as the Ottoman Empire collapsed, with losses on both sides. But it's seen as a matter of principle for some French politicians, and a matter of long-overdue justice for the half a million people in France of Armenian descent, many of whom had relatives among the 1.5 million Armenians killed.

The French bill still needs Senate approval, but after it passed the lower house, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan halted bilateral political and economic contacts, suspended military cooperation and ordered his country's ambassador home for consultations. Turkey argues France is trampling freedom of expression and that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is on a vote-getting mission before April presidential elections.

France formally recognized the 1915 killings as genocide in 2001, but provided no penalty for anyone refuting that. The bill passed Thursday sets a punishment of up to one year in prison and a fine of euro45,000 ($59,000) for those who deny or "outrageously minimize" the killings, putting such action on par with denial of the Holocaust.

The diplomatic riposte by Turkey over the vote by lawmakers in France's lower house, the National Assembly, may get even tougher. It hurts ties as both NATO members are involved in international efforts for peace from Syria to Afghanistan.

"Our measures and precautions will come to life stage-by-stage according to France's position," Erdogan told reporters in Ankara.

France expressed regret over Turkey's response.

"It is important, in the current context, that we keep the paths of dialogue and cooperation open," Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said in a statement.

Strains have plagued the relationship between Paris and Ankara in recent years, in large part because Sarkozy opposes mostly-Muslim Turkey's bid to join the European Union. The bill reached the French parliament after Sarkozy visited Armenia in October and urged Turkey, "a great country" to "honor itself by revisiting its history like other countries in the world have done."

But for it to become law, the Senate must also pass the bill. There is a small window of time to quickly do so, between Jan. 10 and Feb. 24 when a four-month freeze on all but the most critical legislation goes into effect ahead of spring presidential and legislative elections.

There's no guarantee this will be a speedy process. A similar piece of legislation passed by the lower house in 2006 took five years to reach the Senate, which rejected it.

Most historians contend the killings of the Armenians constituted the first genocide of the 20th century. But the issue is dicey for any government that wants a strong alliance with Turkey, a rising power. In Washington, President Barack Obama has stopped short of calling the killings genocide.

An estimated 500,000 Armenians live in France, and many have pressed to raise the legal statute regarding the massacres to the same level as the Holocaust by punishing the denial of genocide.

But the Turkish premier called the legislation's approval "unjust and unfortunate," adding, "There is no genocide in our history, we do not accept it."

"As of now, we are canceling bilateral level political, economic and military activities," Erdogan announced. "We are suspending all kinds of political consultations with France" and "bilateral military cooperation, joint maneuvers are canceled as of now."

The Turkish prime minister said requests for military overflights or landings on Turkish territory would be assessed on a case-by-case basis while permissions granted to French military vessels to dock at Turkish ports would be canceled.

Military cooperation between France and Turkey was suspended in 2006 after the lower-house bid in France to punish deniers of an Armenian genocide. Military cooperation was gradually resumed but remains limited.

Turkey did not limit its actions to ties with Ankara. Sounding almost vindictive, Erdogan threatened to denounce France in Africa and the Middle East.

"We will inform Africa, we will inform the Middle East and when traveling in many countries we will talk about genocides which they have been trying to make (the world) forget about," he said. It was a reference to France's colonial past in Algeria, where massacres were carried out, and to Rwanda where some claim a French role in the 1994 genocide.

It was clear long before the vote ? easily passed with a show of hands ? that France was on a collision course with Turkey. Ankara had threatened to remove Ambassador Tahsin Burcuoglu if French lawmakers did not desist and warned of "grave consequences" to political and economic ties.

The ambassador said he is leaving on the first flight out of Paris Friday morning. He said that diplomacy is never black and white. "There are always gray pages but now, these pages become blacker and blacker," he told reporters in Paris on Thursday night.

Erdogan, a devout Muslim who over the years raised the profile of Turkey's governing Islamic-rooted party, suggested France's bid to punish those who deny the Armenian genocide was in part a way to lure far-right voters to Sarkozy's camp by kindling the fires of Islamaphobia.

"This decision is cause for concern not only for France where there are efforts to make gains through enmity toward Turks and Turkey, and in general terms, through Islamaphobia, but also for Europe and principles defended by Europe," he said.

"I ask: Is there freedom of expression in France? Let me answer it myself: No. (This decision) has eliminated the environment of free thought."

Some French lawmakers expressed outraged at Turkey's attempt to sway their vote and a demonstration by Turks living in France outside the National Assembly.

"The fact that we are subject to pressures ... in front of the National Assembly where the heart of the (French) Republic beats, I find that particularly shocking," said Valerie Boyer, author of the measure and lawmaker from Sarkozy's conservative UMP party.

"Laws voted in this chamber cannot be dictated by Ankara," said Jean-Christophe Lagarde, a deputy from the New Center party.

For many French Armenians, the legislation's advancement meant a swell of relief.

"Our ancestors can finally rest in peace," said 75-year-old Maurice Delighazarian, who said his grandparents on both sides were among the victims of the 1915 massacre.

DUBLIN (AP) ? Alarming financial news flowed out of Europe in a torrent Friday, just a week after the EU leaders struck a deal they thought would contain the continent's debt crisis.

The bombardment shredded hopes of a lasting solution to the turmoil that is endangering the euro ? the currency used by 17 European nations ? and threatening the entire global economy.

In quick succession:

? The Fitch Ratings agency announced it was considering further cuts to the credit scores of six eurozone nations ? heavyweights Italy and Spain, as well as Belgium, Cyprus, Ireland and Slovenia. It said all six could face downgrades of one or two notches.

? Moody's Investors Services downgraded Belgium's credit rating by two notches. Belgium's local- and foreign-currency government bond ratings fell to "Aa3" from Aa1," with a negative outlook. The ratings remain investment grade.

? Ireland's economy shrunk again much deeper than had been expected, with its third-quarter gross domestic product falling 1.9 percent. Ireland is one of three eurozone nations kept solvent only by an international bailout.

? Bankers and hedge funds were balking in talks about forgiving 50 percent of Greece's massive debts, a key issue in the debate over Greece's second rescue bailout.

? The red ink in Spain's regional governments surged 22 percent in the last year, endangering the central government's efforts to cut overall Spanish debt.

? France, the second-largest eurozone economy after Germany, warned that it faced at least a temporary recession next year.

? The euro hovered Friday just above $1.30, a cent higher than its 11-month low.

On the positive side, Fitch said France should keep its top AAA credit rating even though the country's debt load is projected to rise through 2014. Italian lawmakers overwhelmingly passed Premier Mario Monti's new austerity package in a confidence vote, even though many still objected to its pension reforms.

French officials and investors had feared that France could get downgraded, which would have immediate repercussions for the entire eurozone. France and Germany's AAA credit ratings underpin the rating for the eurozone's bailout fund.

European Union leaders confirmed Friday they have distributed the text of their proposed new budget-stability treaty, a pact designed to deter runaway deficits and supposed to become EU law by March. But as growth prospects fade across the continent, governments are facing the likelihood that Europe's debt crisis will prove longer and tougher to overcome than even their most recently revised forecasts.

Until this week, EU leaders held up Ireland as the model for how a debt-struck nation should behave ? defying economic gravity by simultaneously growing its economy while sucking billions out of that same economy in Europe's longest austerity drive.

But on Friday, Ireland announced its third-quarter gross domestic product fell 1.9 percent, its national product 2.2 percent. Economists had expected only an 0.5 percent fall for GDP and none at all for GNP. The latter figure is considered a better measure of Ireland's economic vitality because it excludes the largely exported profits of about 600 American companies based in the country.

Ireland has been cutting spending and hiking taxes since late 2008 and has plans to keep doing so through 2015. Next year's target is euro2.2 billion ($2.9 billion) in cuts and euro1.6 billion ($2.1 billion) in extra charges, including a hike in national sales tax to 23 percent and introduction of a new euro100 ($131) tax on every property.

But the country's finances this year are seriously out of whack: It is spending euro57 billion ($74.5 billion), including euro10 billion ($13 billion) to keep its five nationalized banks afloat, but collecting just euro34 billion ($44 billion) in taxes.

Labor union leaders say the unexpected slump confirmed Friday is irrefutable evidence that Ireland's 4.5 million citizens already have been squeezed too much, too quickly.

"Current policies are making recovery almost impossible," said David Begg, general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. "No economy can sustain the sort of ongoing damage that is being inflicted on us."

"We need growth and we need it quickly," he added.

Ireland's year-old international bailout requires the Irish to reduce their annual deficits from an EU record 32 percent of GDP in 2010 to the traditional eurozone limit of 3 percent by 2015. But analysts agree that Ireland cannot hope to meet the 2015 goal if its economy doesn't grow sufficiently.

Ireland's recovery plan now presumes 1.6 percent growth in 2012 and 2.8 percent growth in each of the next three years ? figures many consider way too optimistic.

Alan McQuaid, chief economist at Bloxham Stockbrokers in Dublin, said Ireland would "do well" to reach 0.5 percent growth this year "given the deteriorating world economic backdrop and the fall-off in global demand." He said he doubted Ireland could top 1 percent growth next year.

In other developments:

ITALY:

The new premier's austerity package passed 495-88 Friday, but lawmakers on both the left and right criticized the pension reforms as too harsh. The plan raises euro30 billion ($39 billion) in extra taxes and pension reforms and plows about euro10 billion ($13 billion) of that back into growth measures.

Prosecutors in the southern region of Calabria, meanwhile, said they were investigating 10 envelopes with bullets inside found in a post office in the town of Lamezia Terme. The envelopes were addressed to the new leader Monti, his labor minister, former Premier Silvio Berlusconi and other top political or media figures, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

Reports said the envelopes contained notes threatening those named if the austerity package wasn't changed.

GREECE:

European officials told The Associated Press that private holders of Greek bonds were resisting EU efforts to persuade them to take a voluntary 50 percent cut in the value of their holdings. The talks in Paris between EU and Greek leaders against representatives of global banks and hedge funds have been very difficult, they said.

The proposed euro100 billion ($130.6 billion) write-off of privately held Greek bonds is supposed to be agreed upon by early next year ? and it's central to Greece's second bailout deal. Without it, Greece's debt is forecast to escalate to nearly 200 percent of GDP.

SPAIN:

A new conservative government committed to increased austerity is coming into office next week, but it faces a rapidly deteriorating financial outlook.

The Bank of Spain announced a 22 percent surge over the past year in the debts of the country's 17 regional governments to euro135.2 billion ($176.6 billion). Spain's central government debt rose 15 percent to above euro706 billion ($922.3 billion).

PORTUGAL:

The main opposition party refused Friday to support the government's plan to amend the constitution to include a budget-deficit limit. All 17 members of the eurozone are supposed to make such commitments as part of the bloc's week-old plan to enshrine spending controls in a new treaty.

In a further worrying development, ratings agency Standard & Poor's on Friday downgraded the credit rating of six leading Portuguese banks to junk status.

Portugal received its own euro80 billion ($104.5 billion) international bailout deal in April.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ? After going more than two years and 26 tournaments without a win, and after so much turmoil in his personal life and with his golf game, Tiger Woods stood over a 6-foot birdie putt Sunday to win the Chevron World Challenge and felt as though nothing had changed.

Finally, the outcome was familiar, too.

Woods poured in the putt to cap off a birdie-birdie finish at Sherwood, close with a 3-under 69 and beat former Masters champion Zach Johnson by one shot. The win ended a drought that lasted 749 days, and might have signaled a change that Woods is on his way back.

He swept his arm across the air, yelled through the din of the gallery and slammed his fist in a celebration that was a long time coming.

Relief? Satisfaction? Vindication?

Woods wasn't sure, and he didn't much care.

"It just feels awesome whatever it is," he said.

Trailing by one shot with two holes to play, Woods came up with two clutch putts. He holed a 15-footer for birdie on the par-3 17th to pull into a tie with Johnson, then hit a 9-iron from 158 yards that landed on the ridge behind the hole and rolled down to 6 feet.

"I've been in contention twice this year, which is not very often," Woods said. "So that's my third time with a chance to win it. I pulled it off this time."

It was his 83rd win worldwide in tournaments that award ranking points, but his first since he won the Australian Masters on Nov. 15, 2009, back when he looked as though he would rule golf for as long as he played.

But he crashed his car into a fire hydrant outside his Florida home on Thanksgiving night, and shocking revelations of extramarital affairs began to emerge, which shattered his image, led to a divorce and cost him four major sponsors. Since then, he has changed swing coaches, caddies and endured more injuries, causing him to miss two majors and fail to make the cut in another.

Now, however, it looks clear that Woods is on an upward path.

"If the man is healthy, that's paramount," Johnson said. "I mean, he's the most experienced and the best player I've ever played with. In every situation, he knows how to execute and win."

Even though those situations have been rare, Woods looked as though he had not forgotten how to win. The only other times he has been in contention this year were the Masters and the Australian Open.

"I felt normal, felt very comfortable," Woods said. "I've been here so many times that, you know, I just feel very comfortable being here in this position. Was I nervous? Absolutely. Always nervous in that position. But it's a comfortable feeling, and I enjoy being in that position. For some reason, it's kind of a comfort to be in there with a chance to win."

Woods won the Chevron World Challenge, which he hosts for his foundation, for the fifth time. He finished at 10-under 278 and donated the $1.2 million to his foundation.

The win moved him from No. 52 to No. 21 in the world ranking, and likely will send expectations soaring for 2012. Woods will not play again until starting his year in Abu Dhabi at the end of January.

If this win felt differently than the last one, Woods wasn't saying.

"They all feel good," he said. "They're not easy. People don't realize how hard it is to win golf tournaments. I've gone on streaks where I've won golf tournaments in a row, but still ... I don't think I've taken it for granted. And I know because of how hard it is."

He had a worthy adversary in Johnson, who had a one-shot lead going into the final round and trailed for only three holes. Johnson tied Woods with a birdie on the par-5 13th, made an unlikely par on the 14th by chipping from the bottom of the green, and appeared to seize control by holing a 12-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Johnson thought his birdie putt on the 17th was good all the way until it burned the edge of the cup. Woods, running out of time, drained his birdie putt to force a tie and send the tournament to the 18th. Johnson missed a 15-foot birdie try, leaving the stage to Woods.

Johnson closed with a 71 and still took home $650,000 for the holidays. Paul Casey, who opened with a 79, had his third straight round in the 60s to finish alone in third at 5 under.

"Tiger can have a long career," Casey said when he finished. "We might look back in another 10 years and actually forget about the last couple of years."

Woods had a four-shot lead over Graeme McDowell a year ago, a margin that evaporated quickly when Woods showed early signs of a struggle, particularly with a pair of three-putts. There was no such evidence this time.

After nearly driving into trouble to the right of the par-5 second, Woods escaped and hit wedge to 3? feet for birdie. His lone bogey on the front nine came at the par-3 eighth, with a back right pin that requires a fade. Woods tugged it well left of the green, and his pitch at a 45-degree angle was too strong and rolled into the fringe about 15 feet away.

Johnson's chip on the third was too strong, he three-putted from about 35 feet for bogey on the fifth and he played a poor chip from below the eighth green for another bogey.

They were tied at the turn when Woods began to pull away. From the right rough, Woods hit a soft sand wedge that landed in the first cut short of the green and fed down the slope to about 4 feet. He two-putted from long range for birdie on the par-5 11th to stretch his lead to two shots when Johnson caught a buried lie in the bunker.

Woods bogeyed the 12th from a bunker, though, and Johnson's birdie on the 13th set up a final hour that was up for grabs until Woods came through in the clutch on the last two holes.

Woods' tournament, which has an 18-man field, has been a good omen for others over the years. The most recent example was Jim Furyk, who won in 2009 and then had his first three-win season the next year and captured the FedEx Cup.

No one ever imagined Woods needing a boost, but that might be the case.

"I don't think we're going to see another 2011, if that makes sense," Furyk said, alluding to Woods failing to reach the FedEx Cup playoffs this year. "If he steadily progresses, keeps getting confidence and moving forward, he's going to return and be one of the best players in the game again."

(AP) ? A court on Friday found Russia's only independent election watchdog guilty of violations, casting doubt on its ability to monitor Sunday's parliamentary election as voters complain of record violations by the Kremlin party.

The Kremlin is determined to see the dominant United Russia maintain its majority in parliament. President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin both made final appeals for the party on Friday, warning that a parliament made up of diverse political camps would be incapable of making decisions.

The respected independent watchdog Golos, which compiles complaints of election law violations across the country and posts them on online, has recorded more than 4,700 complaints, most involving United Russia.

The court agreed with prosecutors that the Golos website violates a law forbidding the publication of public opinion research within five days of an election. Golos was fined 30,000 rubles (just under $1,000).

"They are afraid that Golos will tell the truth. They are concerned that they cannot control us," Golos deputy director Grigory Melkonyants said. "They might silence Golos, but they will not silence those people who witness these violations every day."

He insisted that the group would be able to continue its operations, saying that Russians have a constitutional right to report violations. Golos said it plans to send out 3,000 activists to observe Sunday's election.

Golos' lawyer, Ramil Akhmetgaliev, was less optimistic. "There could be a case to close down the organization," he said. "It depends on how they want to use the law."

The group has come under growing pressure since Sunday, when Putin accused Western governments of trying to influence the election through their funding of unidentified Russian non-governmental organizations. Golos, whose name means "vote," is supported by grants from the United States and Europe.

Kremlin-controlled NTV television showed a half-hour program on Friday evening that attacked Golos directly. The program included shots of suitcases full of U.S. dollars and claimed that Golos was openly supporting opposition parties and trying to discredit the elections.

But the Obama administration expressed concern about the court ruling "as well as what appears to be a pattern of harassment directed against this organization," said White House national security council spokesman Tommy Vietor. He said the U.S. has expressed its concerns to Russia's government and its embassy in Washington.

"We are proud of our support of Golos, which is intended to strengthen democratic institutions and processes ? not influence elections ? and we believe that citizens everywhere should have a right to report concerns about their electoral processes," said Vietor. "The United States has supported and will continue to support those citizens and non-governmental organizations working for free and fair elections in Russia, as we do globally."

United Russia dominates Russia's political life and has received overwhelmingly favorable coverage during the campaign, mostly from Kremlin-controlled national television. But the party is increasingly disliked, seen as representing a corrupt bureaucracy and often called "the party of crooks and thieves."

Putin leads the party and he needs it to do well in the parliamentary election to pave the way for his return to the presidency in a vote now three months away.

On Friday, the final day of campaigning, Putin warned that parliament would be unable to work effectively if members "are punching one another, fighting, pulling one another's hair, as occurs in certain neighboring countries," a clear reference to Ukraine's fractious politics.

"If someone wants to see a show, then they should go to the circus, the cinema or the theater," Putin said during a televised visit to a shipbuilding plant.

Medvedev, in a formal televised address, also warned about the dangers of a parliament "torn by irreconcilable conflicts, incapable of making a decision."

The independent Levada Center released a poll last week that predicted United Russia would receive 53 percent of the vote. While still a majority, this would deprive the party of the two-thirds majority that has allowed it to amend the constitution.

Golos said this week that about a third of the complaints it has received come from voters who say they are being pressured to vote for United Russia, mostly by their bosses at work or their professors at universities. Fears that the vote count will be rigged also were running high.

Lilia Shevtsova, a political scientist at the Carnegie Moscow Center, said most Russians are under no illusions that the election will be fair.

"Everybody understands in Russia that this election is without any kind of choice," she said. "More than 55 percent of Russians consider that the forthcoming elections will be fraudulent and will be manipulated."

Six other Kremlin-approved parties have been allowed to field candidates, while the most vocal opposition groups have been barred.

The Levada poll indicates that the Communist Party may benefit from the protest vote, with its share of the vote predicted to rise to 20 percent from less than 12 percent in 2007. The poll also shows an uptick for the two other parties in parliament: the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party and Just Russia, a party established with Kremlin support to lure votes from the Communists.

(AP) ? A free political climate is essential to economic innovation, and countries that try to censor the Internet are pursuing a "dead end," U.S. Vice President Joe Biden told a group of young entrepreneurs gathered in Istanbul on Saturday.

The international forum, which drew hundreds of attendees, followed up on a meeting in Washington last year aimed at deepening ties between the United States and Muslim communities around the world.

Biden said a political system based on freedom of speech and religion also is the "truest shield" against sectarian strife that has afflicted the Middle East, as well as western Europe in past centuries.

He stressed the importance of a "free political climate in which ideas and innovation can flourish," adding that governments should not try to close the Internet to free expression.

"Those countries will find that that approach is a dead end," he said.

America has a history of innovation, Biden said, noting the success of companies such as Apple and Google, as well as breakthroughs in medical technology such as mobile phone apps that can help diagnose malaria.

He also praised Turkey, noting that the Muslim ally's economy has tripled in size over the last decade.

Turkey's deputy prime minister, Ali Babacan, said Turkey was an example for the region of how Islam and democracy can coexist peacefully.

The U.S. leader arrived in Turkey late Thursday and has been meeting with top officials here. He has urged Turkey to impose new sanctions on Iran, while praising Ankara for its role in pressuring Syria to stop its deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters.

Also Saturday, Biden visited Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is recovering from a surgery. No statement was made after the meeting which lasted about two hours. In a picture distributed by Erdogan's office, the prime minister was seen standing next to Biden as the two leaders smiled. Erdogan was wearing a shirt and jacket but no tie.

Biden later met Patriarch Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians, in Istanbul.

Ahead of his visit to Turkey, Biden urged Turkey in emailed remarks to Turkish daily Hurriyet that Ankara should reopen a seminary that trained generations of Greek Orthodox patriarchs, saying "the continued closure of the seminary is an anomaly and an unnecessary mark against Turkey's international image."

The Halki Theological School on Heybeliada Island, near Istanbul, was closed to new students in 1971 under a law that put religious and military training under state control. The school closed its doors in 1985, when the last five students graduated.
