Afghan orphans hope music to win 'American hearts'

In a country where the arts and music suffered heavily under the Taliban, young musicians ? including dozens of girls ? are representing the potential in Afghanistan's future.

By Thanh Truong, Correspondent, NBC News

KABUL, Afghanistan - From the cold basement of an orphanage in Kabul, the beat of a bass drum bounces through the halls.

Hitting the high hat and cymbals was Laila, a 13-year old orphan and the only known female drummer in Afghanistan.?

"I like playing the drums and there are no other girls in Afghanistan playing the drums,? Laila said with a big smile. ?I'm the only girl and I want to become well known as an Afghan girl playing drums.?

For now, she plays in a basement, but soon it'll be D.C.'s Kennedy Center and New York's Carnegie Hall.?

Laila and 10 other girls from her orphanage will be joining ensembles from the Afghan National Institute of Music as they make their U.S. debut.?

For many of the performers, it will be their first time out of the country and their first time in America.?

"I hear it is very clean and has big buildings and you have such freedom there,? 10-year old Sapna said. "I forget the name of the president of America, but I have heard of him."

Sapna plays the piano and likes the "fast songs" that allow her to move her little fingers quickly over the keys.?

As the security in Afghanistan crumbles, 'Nightly' returns to an orphanage that Brian Williams first visited in 2009 to find girls with big dreams who are focused on getting into college.

Music is part of the curriculum at this orphanage run by Andeisha Farid, the executive director of the Afghan Child Education and Caring Organization.?

'Hope for a better future'
In a country where female freedoms are few, Farid said these young girls represent the potential in Afghanistan's future.

"Afghan women, they suffer so badly. They even struggle for their very basic human rights,? Farid said. ?We hope for a better future for Afghanistan. If we can properly invest in these children, a long-term investment, they realize that there is hope in Afghanistan.?

The sheer fact that dozens of girls are practicing and learning music is a sign of progress in a country where only an estimated 15 percent of women can even read and write, never mind read music or play an instrument.

The arts and music suffered heavily under the Taliban, and not just for women.?

Oct. 30: Brian swaps eyewear with one of the girls at the Kabul orphanage.

Since 2001 a small group of Afghans have worked to bring music back to the country. Ahmad Sarmast, who holds a doctorate in music, spearheaded the movement and the effort culminated in the 2010 establishment of the Afghan National Institute of Music.?

Musicians and their mentors from the ANIM will embark on a two-week tour of the U.S. starting February 2. They'll be playing a combination of classical and Afghan pieces.

Music has given these children an opportunity that so few have in Afghanistan and they are eager to share what they've learned.

"People can understand each other's hearts through music. American people can understand Afghan hearts and Afghans can understand American hearts. It's universal," said Sapna.

Yet, hurdles remain.?

Oct. 30 2009: Andeisha Farid is making a difference in a dangerous place, providing a safe haven in Afghanistan. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Twelve-year-old Fareshta said pressure from her home village prevented her from playing the trumpet.

NBC first met Fareshta when Brian Williams visited her orphanage.

Fareshta said people in her village threatened to make her family outcasts if she kept on attending music school.?

She now only plays when she is in the orphanage. And, while the other girls prepare for their performances in the U.S., she won't be going.?

"I want to go music school and play more music," Fareshta said.

She shrugged when asked if it all seemed unfair. After all, so much that has and is happening in Afghanistan seems unfair.

But after listening to a girl like Laila practicing on the drums, it is easy to understand that the music these young people create is a message of hope in a country awash with disappointments.?

Nightclub fire kills at least 232 in Brazil

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (Reuters) - A nightclub fire killed at least 232 people in southern Brazil early on Sunday when a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze and fleeing partygoers stampeded toward blocked and overcrowded exits in the ensuing panic, officials said.

The blaze in the university town of Santa Maria was started by a band member or someone from its production team igniting a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling, said Luiza Sousa, a civil police official. The fire spread "in seconds," she said.

Local fire officials said at least one exit was locked and that bouncers, who at first thought those fleeing were trying to skip out on bar tabs, initially blocked patrons from leaving. The security staff relented only when they saw flames engulfing the ceiling.

The tragedy, in a packed venue in one of Brazil's most prosperous states, comes as the country scrambles to improve safety, security and logistical shortfalls ahead of the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Olympics, both intended to showcase the economic advances and first-world ambitions of Latin America's largest nation.

In Santa Maria, a city of more than 275,000 people, rescue workers and weary officials wept alongside family and friends of the victims at a local gymnasium being used as a makeshift morgue.

"It's the saddest, saddest day of my life," said Neusa Soares, the mother of one of those killed, 22-year-old Viviane Tolio Soares. "I never thought I would have to live to see my girl go away."

President Dilma Rousseff cut short an official visit to Chile and flew to Santa Maria, where she wept as she spoke to relatives of the victims at the gym.

"All I can say at the moment is that my feelings are of deep sorrow," said Rousseff, who began her political career in Rio Grande do Sul, the state where the fire occurred.

News of the fire broke on Sunday morning, when local news broadcast images of shocked people outside the Boate Kiss, as the nightclub was known. Gradually, grisly details emerged.

The vast majority of the victims, most of them university students, died of smoke inhalation, officials said. Others were crushed in the stampede.

"We ran into a barrier of the dead at the exit," Colonel Guido Pedroso de Melo, commander of the fire brigade in Rio Grande do Sul, said of the scene that firefighters found on arrival. "We had to clear a path to get to the rest of those that were inside."

Officials said more than 1,000 people may have been in the club, possibly exceeding its legal capacity. Though Internet postings about the venue suggested as many as 2,000 people at times have crammed into the club, Pedroso de Melo said no more than half that should have been inside.

He said the club was authorized to be open but its permit was in the process of being renewed.

However, Pedroso de Melo did point to several egregious safety violations - from the flare that went off during the show to the locked door that kept people from leaving.

'HAPPENED SO FAST'

When the fire began at about 2:30 a.m., many revelers were unable to find their way out amid the chaos, confusing restroom doors for exits and finding resistance from bouncers when they did find an exit.

"It all happened so fast," survivor Taynne Vendrusculo told GloboNews TV. "Both the panic and the fire spread rapidly, in seconds."

Once security guards realized the building was on fire, they tried in vain to control the blaze with a fire extinguisher, according to a televised interview with one of the guards, Rodrigo Moura. He said patrons were getting trampled as they rushed for the doors, describing it as "a horror film."

One of the club's owners has surrendered to police for questioning, GloboNews reported.

TV footage showed people sobbing outside the club before dawn, while shirtless firefighters used sledge hammers and axes to knock down an exterior wall to open up an exit.

Rescue officials moved the bodies to the local gym and separated them by gender. Male victims were easier to identify because most had identification on them, unlike the women, whose purses were left scattered in the devastated nightclub.

The disaster recalls other incidents including a 2003 fire at a nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, that killed 100 people, and a Buenos Aires nightclub blaze in 2004 that killed nearly 200. In both incidents, a band or members of the audience ignited fires that set the establishment ablaze.

The Rhode Island fire shocked local and federal officials because of the rarity of such incidents in the United States, where enforcement of safety codes is considered to be relatively strict. After the Buenos Aires blaze, Argentine officials closed many nightclubs and other venues and ultimately forced the city's mayor from office because of poor oversight of municipal codes.

The fire early on Sunday occurred in one of the wealthiest, most industrious and culturally distinct regions of Brazil. Santa Maria is about 186 miles west of Porto Alegre, the capital of a state settled by Germans and other immigrants from northern Europe.

Local clich?s paint the region as stricter and more squared away than the rest of Brazil, where most residents are a mix descended from native tribes, Portuguese colonists, African slaves, and later influxes of immigrants from southern Europe.

Rio Grande do Sul state's health secretary, Ciro Simoni, said emergency medical supplies from all over the state were being sent to the scene. States from all over Brazil offered support, and sympathy messages poured in from foreign leaders.

E-Commerce Ideas for Small Business - Jason Tweed, the million ...

Jason Tweed, the million dollar blogger: E-Commerce Ideas for Small Business

E-Commerce Ideas for Small Business

Is your business an e-business?

It should be, regardless of what type of business you operate.

E-commerce for Retailers

Some businesses make a logical connection to e-commerce. Retail and specialty stores are an obvious example. One of my first clients was a camera shop that sold high-end cameras and photo developing. In the 80s her business thrived with a downtown location and same day film developing, however she ran on hard times in the 90s when Wal-Mart and other stores started offering one-hour developing at dirt cheap prices. Wal-Mart would develop your film at cost because you would kill an hour shopping in their store. The impending digital revolution looked like it was going to be the nail in the coffin of the local camera shop. However, it was a unique time on the Internet. Many suppliers were reluctant to sell inventory to Internet-only businesses, and this is particularly true with high-end camera equipment. Professional photographers still had to special order merchandise locally. Man my client realized he wasn't going to make a living developing film, he focused his efforts on professionals. He started selling camera equipment on eBay, and developed a loyal following which translated into one of the first online camera shops. My client is retired now, however, she survived the transition from bricks and mortar to e-commerce, and thrived during the period when professionals moved from film to digital. Her loyal following came to her when they were replacing 100% of their gear. She sold the business to an e-commerce company and her day job became her nest egg.

E-commerce for B2B

Today most transactions happen online. At one time wholesalers and manufacturers got the bright idea to sell direct to consumers, but many of them found their best customers walk away when faced with online competition. Today smart manufacturers and distributors don't compete with their own customers. That doesn't mean, however, they don't sell online. Small manufacturers can sell products in bulk and create a website with detailed product descriptions, marketing resources and much more to help retailers maximize their profits. Furthermore, using the right e-commerce system, they can keep proprietary information out of the public eye and away from competitors. Even information such as tiered pricing for different types of customers can remain private except to the end-user. E-commerce shouldn't be a new way of doing business. A good e-commerce system focuses on extending the reach of your current business and empowering your marketing engine and customer service capabilities.

E-commerce for service businesses

Service businesses have an advantage in the digital world. A local camera store that moves to the Web is suddenly competing against thousands of other websites, some of them with very deep pockets and amazing logistics. Service businesses, however, have the advantage of a limited amount of local competition. If you're searching for carpet cleaners, IT companies, a chiropractor or a landscaper you're probably going to search locally using the web. You'll find half a dozen websites, and make the decision based on what you see and read. It's kind of like the Yellow Pages used to be; whoever had the largest ad wins most of the business. But what if your Yellow Pages ad could accept payments, schedule appointments, and even deliver a certain level of service in real-time? But then it wouldn't matter the size of your ad, it would be about the quality of your service. Service companies have the opportunity today to develop unique solutions for their e-businesses. Massage therapists can schedule appointments without answering the telephone. Cleaning services can quote a job based on square footage and other factors, schedule the work and collect payment immediately. Health clubs can schedule personal trainers, track membership dues and even sell products.

E-commerce for hospitality

Restaurants can't sell dinners online (yet), but they can generate huge revenues with printable, e-mailable gift cards. Do you have a secret sauce? Package it and sell it online. Do you require reservations? Your customers can reserve a table online, with a text, or by telephone and have them all work together. Hotels and resorts can take reservations and cross promote events with their other facilities, even before the customer arrives. Small jazz clubs can create an intimate atmosphere in the club, while simulcasting to thousands over the web, and both groups are paying customers. Your performers can sell CDs or MP3s to your audience, even after they've left, and you can collect the commission.

E-commerce for consultants, experts, and people who's product is their time

Maximize your revenue from your expertise. Consultants can create project quotes. Experts can sell e-books. Market your seminars and deliver them over the web, live and worldwide. When there's only 24 hours in the day, make sure you're maximizing the value from each of those hours, and still have time to get some sleep.

Every business is an e-business, but not every website generates real sales.

Shares steady after rally, dollar jumps

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stocks stalled on Thursday as traders were cautious after equities hit an 18-month high, while the U.S. dollar climbed to a three-week high against a basket of currencies on concerns about more budget wrangling in Washington.

Data suggesting some momentum in the U.S. economy as the year ended showed private-sector employers stepped up hiring in December, allowing for the upward tick in stocks and further supporting the greenback.

President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans face two more months of tough talks on spending cuts and an increase in the nation's debt limit as the hard-fought deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax hikes and spending cuts covered only taxes and delayed decisions on expenditures until March 1.

"There's still some clouds over the horizon, with the fiscal issue of the government," said Jeff Meyerson, head of trading at Sunrise Securities in New York. "We don't know how they're going to pan out, but in all likelihood there's not going to be a calamity."

The MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> advanced less than 0.1 percent, reversing a dip through most of the session after hitting an 18-month high on Wednesday.

A European equity benchmark <.fteu3> ended up 0.45 percent after hitting its highest intraday level since March 2011, boosted by a belated reaction in Swiss stocks due to a holiday.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 7.03 points, or 0.05 percent, at 13,419.58. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 1.57 points, or 0.11 percent, at 1,463.99. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 2.49 points, or 0.08 percent, at 3,114.75.

The euro tumbled against the dollar as investors grew worried about more budget fights ahead. Analysts say the market could be set up for volatility as Obama and congressional Republicans tussle over the next two months.

The dollar was up 0.4 percent against a basket of major currencies <.dxy> at a three-week high of 80.13, although it slipped 0.4 percent against the yen to 86.97.

"We really just kicked the can down the line and we're set up for another fight on the hill in the next month and a half or so," said John Doyle, currency strategist at Tempus Consulting in Washington.

The euro, which had touched an 8-1/2 month high against the dollar on Wednesday, was down 0.6 percent at $1.3110.

Investors will now turn their attention to Friday's December U.S. employment report. It is expected to show modest job growth of around 150,000, compared with 146,000 in November.

The ADP National Employment Report showed Thursday the U.S. private sector added 215,000 jobs in December, comfortably above economists' expectation of a 133,000 gain. Following the recent rally in equities, any disappointment in Friday's payrolls number could trigger a profit-taking sell-off.

DOLLAR JUMP HITS COMMODITIES

The dollar's strength and rising oil supplies pushed crude prices lower, with Brent down 0.1 percent to $112.31 a barrel. U.S. crude futures were down 0.1 percent at $93.15.

Analysts expect oil prices to drop in 2013 as supply outweighs demand, especially after U.S. crude production hit a 19-year high in 2012.

Gold futures followed commodities lower and were down about 0.6 percent at $1,676.41 an ounce.

Thursday's retreat across riskier asset markets might have been sharper but for data showing activity in China's services sector and at U.S. factories expanded in December, brightening the outlook for global growth.

China's official purchasing managers' index for the non-manufacturing sector rose to a four-month high in December, adding to signs of a revival in the world's second-largest economy.

U.S. Treasury debt prices eased, pushing yields to three-month highs after the U.S. private jobs data cut into the appeal of safe U.S. government issues. Treasuries had already sold off sharply on Wednesday following the U.S. government deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff."

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was down 7/32, the yield at 1.8618 percent, a 15-week high.

Back To School Help For Those Furthering Their Education

Deciding to go back to school is a huge step and it is a decision not to be taken lightly, which is the reason many people look for back to school help when they are in this situation. More and more people, however, have found that going back to school is needed if they are to progress in their current career choice. If you are going to get that promotion you will need to upgrade your education, and that can be as little as taking one extra subject or as much as learning a new field of study. No matter what situation you are in there is one thing for sure, you will have your obstacles to overcome. Let's take a look at some effective study habits to help you get through your back to school days.

Create a Study Schedule to Which You Can Commit

The one thing that most people have a problem with when they are trying to further their education while keeping a steady job is a lack of time. Keeping up a full time job and maintaining a home takes up a lot of time, but if you do not schedule your study time effectively you will not make it through your course. The first thing to remember is that cramming before an exam does not work. Remember those days back in grade school?

If you are going back to school, help yourself by making sure that you schedule regular time for your studying, but most importantly, you need to make sure that you stick to it. This is the most effective way to understand and learn the material you are handed in class.

Outline and Rewrite the notes you make

If you spend any amount of time in a classroom, whether it is a night class or a class during the day, you need to take as many notes as possible. Also, you may want to consider getting back to school help in the form of a study group or at least a study partner. This way you will have someone to go over the notes with you. It is also important not to forget about the notes you have taken. Be sure to study the notes, revise them, outline them and then rewrite them until you have effectively learnt them and know them by heart.

Taking notes and keeping them as a study aid is one of the most important and most effective study habits that you could acquire. Most people fall behind because they do not take notes in class or because they simply misplace the notes they have taken. Do not let this happen to you.

Where you Study is of the Utmost Importance

If you are going back to school help yourself by dedicating a space in your home for your study time. Make sure that the space does not have any distraction, especially within the time you have set aside for your studies. Your dedicated study space does not have to be formally set out as an office or class room, however, you do not want to make it too informal, or cozy. Find a space that you will be comfortable in, but make sure that you do not get to complacent within the space, it has to be a space that is taken seriously. In fact, getting out of your house to study is the most effective study habit that you can pick up. Get yourself into a library, quiet coffee shop or nook in a bookshop and dig yourself a trench in which to study.

The above effective study habits are a good starting to your back to school help list. You may also want to consider how you approach the task you have at hand. Numerous studies show that a person is more effective in a chosen task if they keep positive and look ahead. Never think of yourself as not having enough time or not being good enough and avoid comparing yourself with others. That combined with a solid study schedule, taking care of your notes and making sure that you have a good place to study is the only back to school help you need, but above all, don't forget to learn!

NLRB continues its attack on neutral employment policies ...

The NLRB has continued its assault on garden-variety em??ploy??ment policies, issuing three decisions in recent weeks, each of which concluded that facially neutral employment policies violated employees? rights to engage in protected concerted activity. The cases are:

  • Flex Frac Logistics, LLC
  • TT&W Farm Products, Inc.
  • Costco Wholesale Corp.

To place this issue within a legal context (and for the uninitiated), the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) grants all private-sector employees (unionized and nonunionized) the absolute right to engage in protected concerted activity, which includes, among other things, the right to discuss, between and among themselves, their wages, hours, benefits and other terms and conditions of their employment.

An employer cannot maintain a work rule that reasonably tends to chill em??ployees in the exercise of that right.

What the NLRB did

The NLRB used this doctrine to in??validate the following neutral work rules:

  • A rule prohibiting employees from using the employer?s electronic systems to ?defame any individual or damage any person?s reputation.?
  • A rule prohibiting employees from leaving during their shifts?either by walking off the job or leaving company premises?without management permission.
  • A confidentiality policy that defines ?confidential information? to include ?personnel information and documents.?

Perhaps most telling is the NLRB?s explanation, in?Costco, of its decision invalidating a rule against defamatory language:

?[E]mployees would reasonably conclude that the rule requires them to refrain from engaging in certain protected communications?. [T]he Re??spon??dent?s rule does not present accom??panying language that would tend to restrict its application. It therefore allows employees to reasonably assume that it pertains to ... certain protected concerted activities, such as communications that are critical of the Respondent?s treatment of its employees.?

Restrictions on restrictions

Under the guise of ?protected concerted activity,? the NLRB is making it nearly impossible for employers to maintain any work rules that regulate what employees cannot say or do.

Consider the ruling of an NLRB administrative law judge in a case involving at at-will employment disclaimer in an employee handbook:

?The signing of the acknowledgement form is essentially a waiver in which an employee agrees that ...?at-will?status cannot change, thereby relinquishing [the] right to advocate concertedly, whether represented by a union or not, to change his/her?at-will?status. For all practical purposes, the clause ... premises employment on an em-ployee?s agreement not to enter into any contract, to make any efforts, or to engage in conduct that could result in union representation and in a collective-bargaining agreement, which would amend, modify, or alter the?at-will?relationship. Clearly such a clause would reasonably chill employees who were interested in exercising their Section 7 rights.?

I could apply that tortured interpretation to any work rule and reach the farfetched conclusion that it could deter employees from engaging in protected concerted activity.

The NLRA is supposed to concern itself only with work rules that reasonably?tend to chill employees. Yet, these interpretations go well beyond the realm of reasonableness. They also demonstrate what happens when a federal bureaucracy in??terjects itself into an area that it demonstrably does not understand?the day-to-day operations of em??ployers.

I wish I could whisk up a magical elixir to solve this problem. Alas, for the time being, we are stuck with the NLRB?s intrusiveness into the world of work rules, and the grave uncertainty that comes along for the ride.

How To Incorporate Branded Video Content With Your Business ...

In Internet marketing, brand-building is one of the single most important things you can do.Branded Video ContentThis is even more true than for offline businesses. After all, a well-located roadside diner or car repair shop is going to see plenty of traffic nearly regardless of its branding, but on the so-called ?information superhighway? there really aren?t any comparable situations.

To inspire a sale online you have to get yourself noticed by people who are actively seeking businesses like yours, and you are going to be competing with hundreds or thousands of other websites who are all offering very similar products or services. The only way you can convince people that your business is the best in your market is through brand-building.

Branded video content is one of the most effective ways of doing this. Videos marketing reach out to people, and can communicate a lot of information quickly. Like a well-produced TV advert, a good social video tells people who you are, what you stand for, and why they should do business with you? and not with any of those other guys.

The Clear Benefits Of Branded Video Content

  • Tell a story: More than most forms of text, video can be used to really tell a story that ropes people. It might be your company?s story, or an incident from your history, or just a story that involves your product in some way.

  • Link your brand to an idea: Branded video content allows you to directly associate your company with ideas and attitudes you select. Placing your brand in a certain situation will cause people to associate those things, such as beer and beach parties or perfume and foreign cities. Where you place your brand tells people a lot about how you view it and who you?re appealing to.

  • Spread the word: Unlike traditional advertisements, Internet video is freely spread and shared among users. Creating a branded video that people enjoy inspires them to pass it along, putting your brand in front of that many more new viewers. Incorporating apps that make social sharing easy speeds this process along!

  • Carve out your own space: When you?re on social media, you?re using shared messaging space where you?re automatically competing with stronger brands for attention. When you have a video on YouTube, it?s YouTube?s branding that people will see first, and you need to overcome that. Strong branded video content helps you create a space that?s ?yours? even if you?re having to share it with other brands.video marketing

Plus, on top of all that, creating branded videos is quite inexpensive, and with software and hardware rarely costing more than a few hundred dollars for a basic setup. Unlike in years past, video marketing is available to nearly any business of any size.

Incorporating Branded Video Content In Your Website

If you?re wanting to start embedding your new YouTube videos in your website and see them spread socially, here are a few important tips to keep in mind:

  • Don?t be heavy-handed. Sparing use of a brand is better than hammering viewers over the head with it.

  • Use your brand organically. You get the best response and the best recall if your brand is incorporated organically into a story, rather than being the focus.

  • Keep your colors consistent. From your branded videos to your website to your printed materials, keep your branding and colors consistent throughout. Consistent color schemes are one of those ?little touches? that mark a high-class company.

  • Make it clickable. Use plugins or software to make your brand itself clickable within the video, so that it leads to your website or Facebook page.

Building a brand online isn?t easy, but with branded video content you?ll be getting off to a great start. Stake your claim, make your business?s ideals and goals clear, and try to reach out to the customers you most want to see on your site.

New York bomb suspects had "terrorist encyclopedia"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Police arrested a New York City couple in their apartment on Saturday after authorities investigating a credit card theft found a highly explosive compound, bomb-making manuals, a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition, officials said on Monday.

Morgan Gliedman, 27, and Aaron Greene, 31, are being charged with two counts of suspicion of criminal possession of a weapon, for the shotgun, court documents show.

One sheaf of papers found in the apartment had a cover page that read "The Terrorist Encyclopedia," according to court documents.

Greene has been arraigned and held without bail, according to a law enforcement official involved in the investigation, who was not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.

Gliedman had not yet been arraigned on Monday morning, said a spokeswoman for Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.

Police went to the couple's Greenwich Village apartment Saturday to question Gliedman, the daughter of a prominent New York doctor, to investigate a credit card theft, according to a second law enforcement official.

At the apartment, detectives discovered a plastic bottle containing seven grams of Hexamethylene triperoxide diaminean, or HMTD, court documents show.

HMTD is commonly used in homemade bombs. The discovery prompted the evacuation of nearby buildings, the second source said.

Police also discovered a cache of bomb-making manuals and handwritten notebooks containing chemical formulas, the second source said.

Additionally, investigators recovered a 12-gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun, ammunition, nine high-capacity rifle magazines and a flare launcher, the second source said.

Law enforcement officials said Gliedman was the son of Paul Gliedman, director of radiation oncology at Beth Israel Hospital in Brooklyn.

Neither Gliedman nor his wife, Susyn Schops Gliedman, a Douglas Elliman realtor, returned calls for comment.

Morgan Gliedman studied creative writing at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, according to her Facebook page, which contains a photo of Gliedman outside a pink dressing room, posing in a black, scoop-neck sweater and red checkered skirt.

Greene attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, according to the New York Post, which first reported the arrests.

The newspaper quoted a law enforcement source as saying that Greene was an Occupy Wall Street activist whose political views were "extreme."

Two spokesmen for Occupy Wall Street's New York chapter said they had no knowledge of Greene.
