10 highly valued soft skills for IT pros | TechRepublic

Takeaway: Today?s IT pro needs both technical expertise and soft skills ? that?s nothing new. But the scope of those in-demand soft skills just keeps growing.

Depending on which company you talk to, there are varying demands for IT technical skills. But there is one common need that most IT organizations have: soft skills. This need is nothing new. As early as three decades ago corporate IT sought out liberal arts graduates to become business and systems analysts so they could ?bridge the communications gap? between programmers and end users. And if you look at the ranks of CIOs, almost half have backgrounds in liberal arts.

So what are the soft skills areas that companies want to see in IT professionals today?

1: Deal making and meeting skills

IT is a matchup of technology and people to produce products that run the company?s business. When people get involved, there are bound to be disagreements and a need to arrive at group consensus. IT?ers who can work with people, find a common ground so projects and goals can be agreed to, and swallow their own egos in the process if need be are in high demand.

2: Great communication skills

The ability to read, write, and speak in clearly and effectively will never go out of style ? especially in IT. IT project annals are filled with failed projects that were good ideas but poorly communicated.

3: A sixth sense about projects

There are formal project management programs that teach people PM methodology. But for most people, it takes several years of project management experience to develop an instinct for how a project is really going. Natural project managers have this sixth sense. In many cases, it is simply a talent that can?t be taught. But when an IT executive discovers a natural project manager who can ?read? the project in the people and the tasks, this person is worth his/her weight in gold.

4: Ergonomic sensitivity

Because its expertise is technical, it is difficult for IT to understand the point of view of a nontechnical user or the conditions in the field that end users face. A business analyst who can empathize with end users, understand the business conditions they work in, and design graphical user interfaces that are easy to learn and use is an asset in application development.

5: Great team player

It?s easy for enclaves of IT professionals to remain isolated in their areas of expertise. Individuals who can transcend these technical silos and work for the good of the team or the project are valued for their ability to see the big picture. They are also viewed as candidates for promotions.

6: Political smarts

Not known as a particularly politically astute group, IT benefits when it hires individuals who can forge strong relationships with different constituencies throughout the company. This relationship building facilitates project cooperation and success.

7: Teaching, mentoring, and knowledge sharing

IT?ers able to teach new applications to users are invaluable in project rollouts. They are also an asset as teaching resources for internal IT. If they can work side by side with others and provide mentoring and support, they become even more valuable ? because the ?real? IT learning occurs on the job and in the trenches. Central to these processes is the willingness to share and the ability to listen and be patient with others as they learn.

8: Resolving ?gray? issues

IT likes to work in binary (black and white). Unfortunately, many of the people issues that plague projects are ?gray.? There is no right or wrong answer, but there is a need to find a place that everyone is comfortable with. Those who can identify and articulate the problem, bring it out in the open, and get it solved are instrumental in shortening project snags and timelines.

9: Vendor management

Few IT or MA programs teach vendor management ? and even fewer IT?ers want to do this. But with outsourcing and vendor management on the rise, IT pros with administrative and management skills who can work with vendors and ensure that SLAs (service level agreements) and KPIs (key performance indicators) are met bring value to performance areas where IT is accountable. They also have great promotion potential.

10: Contract negotiation

The growth of cloud-based solutions has increased the need for contract negotiation skills and legal knowledge. Individuals who bring this skills package to IT are both recognized and rewarded, often with highly paid executive positions.

Archeologists unearth extraordinary human sculpture in Turkey

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? A beautiful and colossal human sculpture is one of the latest cultural treasures unearthed by an international team at the Tayinat Archaeological Project (TAP) excavation site in southeastern Turkey. A large semi-circular column base, ornately decorated on one side, was also discovered. Both pieces are from a monumental gate complex that provided access to the upper citadel of Kunulua, capital of the Neo-Hittite Kingdom of Patina (ca. 1000-738 BC).

"These newly discovered Tayinat sculptures are the product of a vibrant local Neo-Hittite sculptural tradition," said Professor Tim Harrison, the Tayinat Project director and professor of Near Eastern Archaeology in the University of Toronto's Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. "They provide a vivid glimpse into the innovative character and sophistication of the Iron Age cultures that emerged in the eastern Mediterranean following the collapse of the great imperial powers of the Bronze Age at the end of the second millennium BC."

The head and torso of the human figure, intact to just above its waist, stands approximately 1.5 metres in height, suggesting a total body length of 3.5 to four metres. The figure's face is bearded, with beautifully preserved inlaid eyes made of white and black stone, and its hair has been coiffed in an elaborate series of curls aligned in linear rows. Both arms are extended forward from the elbow, each with two arm bracelets decorated with lion heads. The figure's right hand holds a spear, and in its left is a shaft of wheat. A crescent-shaped pectoral adorns its chest. A lengthy Hieroglyphic Luwian inscription, carved in raised relief across its back, records the campaigns and accomplishments of Suppiluliuma, likely the same Patinean king who faced a Neo-Assyrian onslaught of Shalmaneser III as part of a Syrian-Hittite coalition in 858 BC.

The second sculpture is a large semi-circular column base, approximately one metre in height and 90 centimetres in diameter, lying on its side next to the human figure. A winged bull is carved on the front of the column and it is flanked by a sphinx on its left. The right side of the column is flat and undecorated, an indication that it originally stood against a wall.

"The two pieces appear to have been ritually buried in the paved stone surface of the central passageway through the Tayinat gate complex," said Harrison. The complex would have provided a monumental ceremonial approach to the upper citadel of the royal city. Tayinat, a large low-lying mound, is located 35 kilometres east of Antakya (ancient Antioch) along the Antakya-Aleppo road.

The presence of colossal human statues, often astride lions or sphinxes, in the citadel gateways of the Neo-Hittite royal cities of Iron Age Syro-Anatolia continued a Bronze Age Hittite tradition that accentuated their symbolic role as boundary zones, and the role of the king as the divinely appointed guardian or gate keeper of the community. By the ninth and eighth centuries BC, these elaborately decorated gateways, with their ornately carved reliefs, had come to serve as dynastic parades, legitimizing the power of the ruling elite. The gate reliefs also formed linear narratives, guiding their audiences between the human and divine realms, with the king serving as the link between the two worlds.

The Tayinat gate complex appears to have been destroyed following the Assyrian conquest of the region in 738 BC, when the area was paved over and converted into the central courtyard of an Assyrian sacred precinct. These smashed and deposited monumental sculptures also include a magnificently carved lion that was discovered last year and Hieroglyphic Luwian-inscribed stelae (stone slabs or pillars used for commemoratives purposes). Together these finds hint of an earlier Neo-Hittite complex that might have once faced the gateway approach.

Scholars have long speculated that the reference to Calno, identified as one of the "kingdoms of the idols" in Isaiah's oracle against Assyria (Isaiah 10:9-10), alludes to the Assyrian devastation of Kunulua (i.e., Tayinat). The destruction of the Luwian monuments and conversion of the area into an Assyrian religious complex may represent the physical manifestation of this historic event, subsequently memorialized in Isaiah's oracle, experts say.

I Tried To Stop A Guy From Stealing My Date' s ... - Business Insider

A distressing and painful tale from the Wall Street Journal's Rolfe Winkler...

He and his date were riding a New York subway in Brooklyn. Just before the doors closed at a stop, some guy grabbed his date's iPad and took off out of the car.

Winkler chased the guy--only to get clobbered by an assistant on the platform. He ended up with a broken jaw.

Thus starts Winkler's story about the rise in "iCrime"--muggers stealing iPhones, iPads, and other "smart" devices and then selling them in secondary markets.

The cops call it "Apple picking." The devices are so valuable and easy to fence these days that the industry is booming.? There were 26,000 "incidents" of this in New York in the first 10 months of last year, the vast majority of which involved smartphones.

A "secondhand" iPhone can apparently fetch $400 once it has been wiped clean.? Many of them are shipped overseas, where new iPhones can cost $1,000.

Earlier this year, a man in the Bronx was shot dead for his iPhone. A guy in Denver had part of his finger ripped off when thieves ripped an Apple Store bag out of his hands. Rolfe Winkler had to drink through a straw for a month.

The way to prevent this is to make the stolen devices worthless (or close), so carriers are discussing the idea of giving each device a unique ID that can only be used by the owner. To prevent stolen devices from being used on WiFi, meanwhile, it might be possible to allow users (or the manufacturers) to remotely bork the devices if they are stolen--sort of like cancelling a stolen credit card.

(This solution reminds me of the solution to the wave of car-radio theft that hit cities in the 1980s. Walking around the streets of New York in those days, you'd see car windows smashed all over the place. One of the first solutions was allowing owners to remove their stereo systems when they left the cars--sliding them out like a book. The more successful and convenient solution, if memory serves, was electronically encoding the devices so they wouldn't function if they were removed from the car.)

In any event, our sympathies to Rolfe Winkler for his broken jaw.? And don't get engrossed in your device on the street or subway, especially when the doors are about to close...

Trulia, A Real Estate Listing Company, Has Supposedly Filed For An ...

Robert Libetti/ Business Insider

Another Silicon Valley startup is getting ready to go public. Trulia, a real estate listing company based in San Francisco, has filed for an IPO, Reuters' sources say.

JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank are reportedly behind it, but neither the company nor the banks have confirmed the news.

Trulia shows homebuyers and sellers what properties are worth; it also provides information about neighborhoods, school systems, crime rates and more. It was founded in 2004 by Pete Flint and has raised $32.8 million from Sarofim Fayez and Co, Kevin Hartz, Accel Partners, Thorner Ventures and Sequoia Capital.

Since its revenues are below $1 billion, it's able to file for an IPO confidentially under the JOBS Act without revealing all of its financial information. The S-1 needs to be made public at least 21 days prior to the road show, however. LegalZoom and Workday also filed to go public this way.

Carly Rae Jepsen: Threatened by Lady Gaga!

Carly Rae Jepsen is having a tough week.

Now, Lady Gaga has set her sights on Carly Rae.

With "Call Me Maybe" surpassing Gaga's "Born This Way" and setting the record for most weeks atop the Billboard 100 (7), the eccentric artist has taken to Twitter and addressed her young competition:

We assume the Lady was joking around, and this is actually a big sign of respect for Jepsen. Still, we might sleep with at least half an eye open if we were Carly Rae. Gaga's followers are dubbed Little Monsters, after all.

Home Renovation and Remodeling: Design Your Dream Home

It all begins with a dream. Cathedral ceilings! Skylights! Room-sized closets! But, the dream may turn into a nightmare, unless you plan ahead. Home renovation often refers to building projects that alter the structure of an existing home; it can also include improvements to lawns, gardens, and outdoor structures, such as gazebos and garages. A makeover is an electrifying time in your lifespan and we appreciate the significance of making a exclusive practice for every customer. Visualize lastly having the dream pantry you?ve continually desired!? The minute it emanates to basement makeovers, the possibilities are infinite. We can renovate that under-utilized area into a guest bedchamber, family gym, or more. You will be astonished to perceive how expressively a revamp can upsurge the value of your home. Our services include:?kitchen remodeling,?bathroom remodeling,?interior renovations,?home additions, basement renovations, barrier free design, electrical, plumbing, siding installation, repairs, stone, brick and concrete work, waterproofing, underpinning and foundation work.

Home renovations include the diagnosis and resolution of problems in a home, and are related to home maintenance to avoid such problems. Many types of repairs are complicated, time-consuming or risky as to suggest the assistance of our qualified?handyman,?property manager,?contractor/builder, or other?professionals. Repair is not necessarily the same as?home improvement, although many improvements can result from repairs or maintenance. Often the costs of larger repairs justify the alternative of investment in full-scale renovations. It may make just as much sense to upgrade a home system as to repair it or incur ever-more-frequent and expensive maintenance for an inefficient, obsolete or dying system. It is also useful to establish limits on how much time and money you?re willing to invest before deciding the remodeling is overwhelming, and less likely to be completed.

Living the good life often comes?at a price and sometimes that price?is in the form of taking from the environment more than we are willing to give back. While renovating we use the natural resources that are waiting to evolve, but instead, along with its secrets, benefits and natural harmony, it is destroyed.

According to us, we need to re-evaluate the areas on the property that consist of old interiors and decor. By appreciating these areas and acknowledging what we can do for the environment, we turn the wasteful spaces into useful areas that are not just compatible with your lifestyles but also can improve your overall well-being.

Our services in Toronto meet your needs by playing an active positive role in shaping a beautiful house. The framework of every job done focuses on best quality products, timely completion of tasks and environment friendly techniques and each project is specifically tailor-made for each client, based on factors such as lifestyle, architecture, environmental conditions and any regulatory requirements.

Kyocera DuraXT (Sprint)

The Kyocera DuraXT ($69.99) is Sprint's replacement for the Kyocera DuraMax (3 stars). It has a bigger, better speaker, but is otherwise pretty much the same rugged flip-style?cell phone. It's super tough, uses Sprint's relatively new Direct Connect service, and has a loud speaker and great battery life. A dated UI and few features mean it's only average otherwise, but if you need a push-to-talk feature phone, the DuraXT is your best bet.

Design, Call Quality, and Direct Connect
Like Sprint's other push-to-talk phones, the DuraXT is built like a big old brick. It measures 4 by 2.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) when closed, and is covered in a grippy, scratch-resistant, rubberized casing. It's also a bit heavy, at 5.3 ounces. It feels tough, and that's for good reason. The DuraXT meets military specification 810G, so it's resistant to dust, extreme temperatures, low pressure, rain, salt fog, shock, and vibration, among other rough conditions. It can even be submerged in three feet of standing water for 30 minutes. It survived plenty of drops of drops to the floor of the PCMag Labs with nary a scratch. On one drop the door that covers the charging port came open, but nothing was damaged. We also placed the phone in a bucket of water, where it was still able to receive calls and snap photos.

There's a 1-inch, monochrome 96-by-64-pixel external display that shows battery life, reception, and time. The internal 320-by-240-pixel LCD looks surprisingly sharp. The default font size is a bit small, but you can make it larger. The phone's keypad is great; it features large, raised keys with plenty of space in between, which should make it possible to dial while wearing gloves.

The DuraXT is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi.?Reception is average and voice quality is good overall. Earpiece volume goes very loud, and voices sound clear, if a bit thin. Calls made with the phone also sound natural, with good noise cancellation. Calls sounded good through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked well. Battery life was great at 8 hours and 12 minutes of talk time.

Back when we reviewed the DuraMax, our biggest issue was that the speaker volume wasn't as loud as we would've liked it to be. After all, a push-to-talk phone should be built to hear outside in a noisy environment. While the DuraXT's speaker isn't quite deafening, it is certainly louder than the DuraMax. It's loud enough to hear on a busy city street, so it should be loud enough to hear over most reasonable construction noise.

Sprint's Direct Connect service combines the 3G Internet speeds and nationwide coverage of Sprint's CDMA network with the instantaneous push-to-talk of the old Nextel iDEN network. You need to be in a Sprint coverage area in order to use the DuraXT, but you can still make push-to-talk calls to Nextel iDEN subscribers.?The new network supports Call Alert With Text, which sends an audio alert and text message to another subscriber, along with Group Connect, which can connect 20 subscribers together at once. You can also use the Direct Connect button to mass-message up to 200 Direct Connect subscribers in one shot, or to send recorded messages to email addresses or handsets via text message.?

For this review, I tested Direct Connect using two different DuraXTs. It takes about a second to initiate the connection, after which transmissions are essentially instantaneous. Voice quality is solid, and like the speakerphone, volume is suitably loud.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
Like the rest of Sprint's push-to-talk lineup, the DuraXT is an otherwise bare bones feature phone. The main menu features the same grid with 12 icons that Sprint has used on many flip phones in the past. It's dated, and requires many button presses to perform even the simplest tasks.

There's an Access NetFront 4.1 browser for reading WAP pages; desktop HTML is out. The DuraXT also supports Sprint Navigation for voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions, as well as Sprint Family Locator. You also get the standard apps like an alarm, calculator, and calendar.

There's no music or video player, so the nonstandard 2.5mm headphone jack on the right side of the phone isn't a big issue. You get 64MB of free internal memory, along with a 2GB microSD card installed in the slot underneath the battery. You probably won't need anything larger than this, though my 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine as well.

The 3.2-megapixel camera includes an LED flash, but no auto-focus. It snaps photos in about 0.5 second, but then takes a good 2 seconds to save them. Test photos look decent, if a little dark, with acceptable color and detail. Videos, on the other hand, are terrible. They max out at a miniscule 176-by-144-pixels and play back at a stuttering 10 frames per second indoors and 15 frames per second outside.

If you're looking for a push-to-talk feature phone on Sprint, the Kyocera DuraXT is your best bet. The Kyocera DuraCore ($49.99, 3 stars) costs $20 less, but it isn't as rugged and lacks a camera. The Kyocera DuraPlus?($69.99, 3 stars) is a slab-style phone that's just as rugged as the DuraXT, but it's a 6.7-ounce beast that also lacks a camera. If you're interested in something more advanced, the?Motorola Admiral?($99.99, 4 stars) is a ruggedized push-to-talk Android smartphone with plenty of excellent multimedia features, as well as access to more than 400,000 apps in the Android Market.?

Special Education Law Blog: Procedural Safeguards - The series ...

This is the?final installment in a multi-part series on procedural safeguards under the federal special education law, the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. I work a lot in this area, so it is near and dear to my heart. Despite the importance of procedural safeguards. however, many issues in this area are misunderstood. I hope that all of the different types of special education stakeholders who read this blog find the information in this series helpful. Be sure to tell me what you thought about the series.

Attorneys? Fees

IDEA?04 changed the section on attorneys? fees to provide that a school district or SEA may now recover their attorneys? fees from the parent?s attorney who files a complaint that is frivolous, unreasonable, or without foundation or who continues to litigate after the litigation clearly becomes frivolous, unreasonable, or without foundation. Section 615 (i)(3)(B)(i)(II). Also, the statute now provides that a school district or SEA may now recover their attorneys? fees from the parent or the parent?s attorney where the claim was presented for an improper purpose, such as to harass, to cause unnecessary delay or to needlessly increase the cost of litigation. Section 615 (i)(3)(B)(i)(III). The standard for an award against a parent?s attorney or a parent is very high, and it is unlikely that many awards of attorneys? fees will be made against parent?s attorneys, and especially against parents without attorneys. These new provisions, however, may cause counsel who represent parents to decline borderline cases. There could also be awards in those rare cases in which parents clearly abuse the system. OSEP declined to clarify the standard for an award of attorney?s fees against a parent stating that judicial interpretations would likely vary on a case-by-case basis and should be left to the discretion of the court. 34 CFR Section 300.517(c)(2)(ii); 71 Fed. Register No. 156 at page 46708 (August 14, 2006).

The provision permitting an award of attorneys? fees to parents who prevail in a due process or court proceeding remains unchanged in IDEA?04. The regulations provide that attorney?s fees may not be awarded for attending IEP team meetings, except where they are convened as a result of judicial action, an administrative proceeding, or in the discretion of the state, for a mediation. 71 Fed. Register No. 156 at pages 46708-09 (August 14, 2006).

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: OSEP has also published a Question and Answer document, Questions and Answers On Procedural Safeguards and Due Process Procedures For Parents and Children With Disabilities (OSEP Revised June 2009). The Q & A document is available at the OSEP?IDEA website:

In addition, NICHY, also known as the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities, has issued a series of training module on procedural safeguards. The training modules are available online here. and as to all matters in volving dispute resolution, take a quick look at the CADRE website.

Turkey blocks truck route into Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? Turkey sealed its border with Syria to trucks on Wednesday, cutting off a vital supply line to the embattled nation as fighting stretched into its fifth day in the commercial capital of Aleppo.

Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan said deteriorating security was behind the closure.

"We have serious concerns over the safety of Turkish trucks regarding their entry and return from Syria," Caglayan said, noting that there had already been a 87 percent drop in trucks traveling to Syria this year.

Turkey was an ally of neighboring Syria before the uprising against authoritarian President Bashar Assad began 16 months ago. But it has turned into a harsh critic and its territory along the of the 566-mile (911-kilometer) border is used as a staging ground for the rebel army as well as a haven for thousands of refugees fleeing violence that activists say has killed 19,000 people so far.

Northern Syria, especially the province of Idlib, has been a steady scene of heavy fighting between Syrian forces and the rebels and large swathes of the countryside are under rebel control. Rebels, for their part, generally move their weapons and material over the border through clandestine smuggler routes.

Caglayan told reporters Turkish trucks would not be allowed to into Syria, though no restrictions were being imposed on trucks going the other way. The sealing will deprive Syria of a common route for imports. Dozens of Turkish trucks were either looted or torched when the rebels captured the border crossing of Bab al-Hawa last week. Turkish truck drivers have also been caught in the cross fire or been the target of attacks during the civil war.

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed confidence at rebel advances, saying that they were taking more and more territory.

"It will eventually result in a safe haven inside Syria, which will then provide a base for further actions by the opposition," she said Tuesday, urging the opposition to develop institutions and protect the rights of all Syrians.

The ability of the Libyan rebels to create a liberated area in the east of the country was key in their successful battle that ousted Moammar Gadhafi last year. However Syrian rebels' hold over territory is tenuous. They do not have any major urban areas under their control ? and are not backed by NATO's air force the way the Libyans were.

The main battle in the country is currently just 40 miles (60 kilometers) from the Turkish border in the commercial hub of Aleppo, Syria's largest city, which was attacked on Saturday by an alliance of rebel forces. They infiltrated sympathetic neighborhoods in the north and south and then have been gradually moving toward the historic old city at the center, a U.N. world heritage site.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than two dozen people killed in fighting yesterday in Aleppo and large numbers of people fleeing the southern neighborhood of Sukkari Wednesday morning.

Activist video from Wednesday showed a burning police station in the southern neighborhood of al-Kelassa, while gunfire could be heard ringing out in the background. The Associated Press cannot independently confirm events portrayed in such videos posted online.

A major assault on Damascus last week was eventually crushed with attack helicopters and heavy weapons that devastated neighborhoods sympathetic to the rebels. Shelling was followed up with door to door searches that were still going on by Wednesday to flush out remaining rebel sympathizers.

Starting Tuesday, activists and local residents in Aleppo reported Syrian forces began using similar heavy weapons, including attack helicopters, to crush the rebel advance.

While government forces are stretched thin by fighting taking place across the country in cities like Homs, Hama, Deir el-Zour, Daraa and in Idlib province, they can defeat any single rebel assault by concentrating their forces. Aleppo and Damascus are the two largest cities and are key to the regime's survival.

There have been signs of fraying, however, in the elites of the regime. On Tuesday, a top military commander and close friend of Assad confirmed his defection. Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass, son of a former defense minister, said in a video broadcast on Al-Arabiya TV that Syrians must work together to build a new country.

"Our duty today as Syrians is to unify for one goal, and that is to make our country free and democratic," he said.

It was his first public appearance since he left Syria earlier this month. French officials later confirmed that he was in France.

A new commander for the 300-member UN observer force, Lt. Gen. Babacar Gaye arrived late Tuesday in Damascus along with the U.N. official in charge of peacekeeping operations to hold a series of meetings to assess the prospects for a U.N. peace plan that is being widely ignored.

New York Times drops BlackBerry app

(Reuters) - BlackBerry users can no longer use the official New York Times app to read news stories over their devices, in a fresh blow to Research In Motion, the maker of the smartphone once considered an essential tool for business professionals.

New York Times Co, which publishes the prestigious newspaper, said it had stopped supporting its applications for BlackBerry and the Palm Pre as of Monday, meaning the apps will no longer download news stories.

"It's a matter of usage of our apps, and we dedicate our resources where we think there's the highest level of usage," said New York Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy. "We've seen a drop-off."

But Murphy said the company has not ruled out developing an app for devices that will run on RIM's new operating system, BlackBerry 10, due out early next year.

"That decision has not been made, and it's entirely possible that we might," she said.

BlackBerry users can still read the paper over their phones via the New York Times website.

"Currently, our mobile website offers a more complete New York Times experience than the NYTimes app native to your device," said a notice to customers on the New York Times website.

RIM brought mobile email into the mainstream with its first BlackBerry devices more than a decade ago, but its market share has evaporated as consumers flock to Apple Inc's iPhone and devices based on Google Inc's Android system.

The company's sales have flagged as customers switch to competing devices or put off upgrading ahead of the BlackBerry 10 launch.

The stock, down 1 percent on the Toronto Stock Exchange at C$7.01, has fallen more than 50 percent so far this year.

RIM, based in Waterloo, Ontario, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Prosperity Springs from Growing Abundance and Not from Contrived ...

Here?s a letter to an e-mail correspondent, Mr. Ernie S_______:

Dear Mr. S_______:

In your e-mail to me you complain that ?government is holding down wages and thus inflation by letting in millions of poor and uneducated workers who have taken over entire formally [sic] well paying unionized industries such as the building trades and meat packing.?

I?ve some questions for you.

First, are you aware that the steady decline in the percentage of workers who are unionized began in the mid-1950s when immigration was modest ? that is, long before the current upsurge in immigration which began in the last quarter of the 20th century?

Second, if it is harmful government policy to allow firms to substitute lower-paid workers for higher-paid workers, is it also harmful government policy to allow firms to mechanize their operations whenever such mechanization results in the substitution of lower-cost machines for higher-cost labor?? Is it harmful government policy to fund, or even to permit, the training of engineers who invent production methods that enable less-skilled workers to perform tasks that formerly required high-skilled workers?? Is it economically harmful government policy to allow homeowners to repair their own plumbing, to rewire their own kitchens, and to treat their own sniffles given that the direct effect of such do-it-yourself activities is to reduce the demand for high-wage plumbers, electricians, and physicians?

If you answer ?no? to any of these questions, you should recognize that there?s nothing economically harmful about government allowing firms to hire lower-wage immigrants.? Economically, the labor-market consequences of immigration are identical to those of these other activities ? namely, greater output at lower costs.

Sincerely,

Syrian ambassadors to Emirates, Cyprus defect

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syria's ambassadors to the United Arab Emirates and Cyprus, who are husband and wife, have defected to Qatar, spokesmen for the opposition Syrian National Council said on Wednesday.

They are respectively the second and third senior diplomats to join the opposition to President Bashar al-Assad since the revolt began 16 months ago.

"The ambassador (Abdelatif al-Dabbagh) is now in Qatar," SNC spokesman Mohammad Sarmini told Reuters by telephone, referring to the ambassador to the UAE.

Sarmini said Dabbagh is married to Lamia al-Hariri, Syria's ambassador to Cyprus, who also defected to Qatar in coordination with her husband.

Hariri, a Sunni Muslim from the southern province of Deraa, the birthplace of the 16-month-old uprising, is the niece of Syrian Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa, whose role is ceremonial in a power structure dominated by Assad's Alawite minority sect.

Nawaf al-Fares, Syria's ambassador to Iraq, who is a Sunni tribal figure from eastern Syria, defected to Qatar through Jordan two weeks ago, according to diplomatic sources.

Son of ex-Syrian defense minister defects

BEIRUT (AP) ? A top Syrian military commander, a close friend of Syrian President Bashar Assad, has confirmed his defection from the regime.

Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass, son of a former defense minister, said in a video broadcast on Al-Arabiya TV that Syrians must work together to build a new, democratic country.

It was his first public appearance since he left Syria earlier this month. His long silence raised questions about whether he had joined the anti-Assad uprising or merely fled the civil war.

Tlass is the highest-level defector from the Syrian regime in 17 months of bloodshed that activists say has killed more than 19,000 people.

He was a member of the elite Republican Guard and son of former Defense Minister Mustafa Tlass.

The younger Tlass did not say where he is.

Fostering a Blessing: Adoption Update

Denise

Here's where we are in the process...with some corrections and new steps:
  1. Adoption home study interview - Mom
  2. Adoption home study interview - Middle Boy
  3. Adoption home study interview - family
  4. Fingerprints - Mom
  5. Adoption study paperwork - Foster Care Specialist - waiting for the results of my fingerprinting...which by the way has been done SEVEN TIMES in the last two years.
  6. Determine baseline monthly stipend - Service Coordinator/Mom - This will be done at our FTM in June.? I am going to have to figure out how this works.
  7. File stipend collateral paperwork - Service Coordinator
  8. State determine final subsidy payment and schedules subsidy negotiation with foster parent. - We have been in this step since June 6, 2012.? Both service coordinators have tried to get a status update in the last couple of weeks and their emails and calls have gone unanswered.
  9. Select adoption attorney - Mom - I can do this.? I just have to find the paperwork I got from CASA with the recommendations.
  10. Prepare adoption paperwork - Adoption Attorney - He is on vacation this week so hopefully he can wrap up the paperwork
  11. File adoption paperwork at courthouse - Adoption Attorney - Ideally this would get done on June 21, 2012, the first available day it can happen. - This did not happen since the subsidy is not completed.? It will not happen until two weeks after subsidy negotiation is completed and signed and at this time there is no tentative date for the meeting. - This could happen by the end of July.
  12. Wait 30 - 90 days - Everyone? Wait 4 to 8 weeks.? I was wrong about the days.
  13. Adoption hearing - Everyone - There will probably be two of these, because the boys have different judges and are on different court dockets.? The boys really want them to be on the same day, but I don't think we have much control over that.? Ideally they would at least be in the same week.
  14. Big party - Everyone - no details yet, still wondering what this should be.? Younger Boy will want a big party...Middle Boy will want to be a small family celebration, because he doesn't like the attention drawn to him.
The closer we get to adoption the worse behaviors get in our home.? The boys are expecting a magic wand to wave over us at the hearing, but it isn't likely to happen.

polecat news and views: The Democratic Party as the Party of Race

In fact, it?s getting to be outrageously so. The rude treatment of Mitt Romney at the NAACP convention is yet another data point in what has become an all-too-predictable scenario.

Much of the reason for this stems from the extreme dependency of the Democratic Party on race politics. With union membership dwindling, the party would literally disintegrate without the overwhelming support of African Americans and Hispanic Americans. Without at least the perception of racism, the Democratic Party has only marginal support. The party is forced to encourage it for its survival.

A whole network of connections, careers, and lifetyles has evolved from that, many of them largely counter-productive. Indeed, the argument can be made that the Democratic Party has destroyed the lives of minorities in order to save itself. Their programs, from the Great Society onwards, have done nothing substantial to improve minority lives, only to encourage dependency. The proof of this failure we see before us today in the dreadful statistics on black and Hispanic unemployment, far worse than the already horrendous national numbers. The more minorities are ?helped,? the worse their lives become, the less equal we are.

The Democratic Party is then the true racist party, trapped in nostalgia for a time when genuine racism ? Jim Crow, etc. ? stalked the land. They have to assume significant white racism still exists because not to do so threatens the fabric of their being. A Tea Partier has to be a racist so you can dismiss his ideas without having to confront them or even think about them. Mitt Romney is just another rich white man so you don?t have to deal with what he is saying, you don?t have to evaluate whether he has a solution to a mutual problem.

It?s all racist as I understood the word in the sixties ? making assumptions about other people so you don?t have to consider their humanity ? only it?s now in reverse. This isn?t to say that whites undergo severe oppression. They don?t. But the racial climate of our society is increasingly polarized and the survival of the Democratic Party, as presently constituted, is the cause. Everyone?s life suffers as a consequence, with the exception perhaps of those who make a living off race-baiting. That the minorities being exploited suffer most of all is almost a cliche. Unfortunately, it also happens to be true.

Correcting this depressing conundrum will not be easy. It is a long time in the making and is based on numerous mythologies and misconceptions, not to mention deeply entrenched habit. It is also based on vengeance, a vengeance fanned by the liberal media for the preservation of their own power and to validate that same nostalgic self-righteousness. But vengeance is an especially powerful creator of racism (remember Gandhi: an eye for an eye and the world will die). Because whites behaved in an atrociously racist manner toward blacks in the past cannot be allowed as any sort of justification for the reverse. That is a prescription for perpetuated mutual destruction.

And yet that remains the spoken/unspoken predicate of election 2012. Just as America rejoiced in electing Barack Obama in 2008 as the first (part) African American president, we are being asked to reelect him for similar reasons. But it would also be racist, perhaps more so, actually to reelect him for similar reasons. The color of Barack Obama?s skin is and should be irrelevant. And yet, of course, it has not been and continues to be the trump card of the Democratic Party. If Barack Obama were white, he would be one of the least likely candidates for reelection in American history. Instead, despite demonstrated incompetence, he remains in contention, perhaps even the favorite. Under current conditions, however, the reelection of Barack Obama can be seen only as a triumph of racism.

Muscle Building Made Easy With These Pointers | FitnessA-Z ...

Chin Up With Knee Up

You may see muscle bound bodies at the gym and on the street and think that you can't ever get a body like that. The truth is that you can, if you commit yourself and put in the work. You just need to know how to get started. Here are some great ways to start building muscle.

You can keep your workouts fresh and bolster your motivation levels by changing up your routine from time to time. Keep in mind that a new routine will need a little trial-and-error time in order to fine tune its performance. Designing an effective routine is serious business. So, don't rebuild your whole routine more than three or four times a year.

Push ups are a fantastic exercise to consider if you are trying to build muscle. They do not require any equipment and you can do them anywhere. Push ups, when done correctly, will build muscle in the upper body and boost your metabolism, leading to a healthier body over all.

You should think about joining a gym and getting a personal trainer. Working out to build muscles is not as easy as it sounds: a trainer will be able to help you select the right exercises and transform your diet so you are getting the best out of your training routine.

Keep your experience with muscle building in mind when you workout. If you are completely new to this activity, then go for full body workouts. This will give you the most benefit. Targeted workouts are better for veteran muscle builders, as they may have problem areas that need more attention, or worn down areas that need rest.

To gain that lean muscle mass, be sure to use free weights. These have been proven to work better than cables and machines for building lean muscle. Free weights allow you to use many different muscles as you lift. This way, you will be stimulating added muscle growth by working the extra muscles.

Knowing the number of sets that work for your body is vital for building muscle mass. Many experts recommend you do around twelve to sixteen sets for your large muscle groups, such as your back, chest, and legs, and about nine to twelve sets for your smaller muscle groups, such as your calves, shoulders, and arms. Although this might work for some people, this can cause others to overtrain or undertrain. This is why you must understand the way your body responds to workouts.

Complete those exercises that work more than one muscle group first, and then work on the ones that require the use of an isolated muscle. Doing this will allow you to complete the exercises that use the most energy first, while you are still feeling fresh and energetic. You will complete a more effective workout and put focus on working your entire body, rather than just one muscle group.

Building muscle can be done with time and effort, but you also need the right kind of information and training. Let the tips in this article be your guide; apply them to your muscle building regiment and watch for results. Stay patient and you will soon be one of those bodies you used to envy

OUYA: Android Game Console's Secrets Raise Questions

While the OUYA ? the Android-based, hackable video game console ? is still raking in funds on its multi-million dollar Kickstarter project, the secretive nature of the project is raising questions for game developers.

?How can the OUYA convince developers who are sitting on the sidelines to jump in?? asks Gree Vice President of Studio Operations Anil Dharni. ?I am very interested, but where are the users? Where are the gamers??

Until three months ago, Dharni was the Chief Operating Officer of Funzio, which released three well-received titles on iOS and one on Android. He and CEO Ken Chui sold Funzio to Gree for $210 million, giving Gree, a Japanese social network that has been expanding aggressively into America, its own development team.

Dharni says OUYA has two distinct advantages: it is using Android as its platform, and its focus is on the television market. He said the biggest challenge its makers face will be luring developers to create games that will have to be programmed differently from any others on the Android market. Since the OUYA will use a traditional console controller with a touchpad in the center, even games on the Android market will need to be restructured to work with it.

OUYA is not entirely bereft of content. On July 19th, the company announced via its Kickstarter page that Robert Bowling would bring prequel games to his recently announced zombie survivor game Human Element exclusively to the OUYA. Though a big name for the platform, it?s only the second title confirmed for the console.

Bowling, who was behind the Call of Duty series of games, said he has already contributed $10,000 to the console?s development. This type of developer involvement is something that Dharni says could be a concern.

?It?s a chicken and the egg situation,? he says. ?I would like to know if it?s gamers or game developers funding the project on Kickstarter. It makes a difference on who will end up using it.?

Dharni says Gree will take a wait-and-see approach with the OUYA; the company doesn?t want to have its products associated with something that is going to flail in the marketplace. But he said the console space is the next frontier to be disrupted, similar to how free-to-play has changed mobile and PC gaming.

?It?s often the case that the first one that launches doesn?t end up being the right product,? he says. ?I hope it works out for them and I wish them luck.?

Separation Anxiety | Home and Family

Posted by adee on 22/07/2012 in Babies Toddler

I would like to recommend a date night at least once every two weeks. Leave your child for today, it may be difficult, but if your child is suffering from separation can be difficult to stay away. A child can experience the difference between a number of reasons, or by trauma such as weaning or changing the transmission caused by the family. Other times noted, the child, that if you leave is still there, but not with them, which can lead to their suffering. Emergencies usually occur after 6 months but may take longer than one year.

Separation Anxiety

Separation Anxiety

When confronted with this problem, here are some techniques that you might find useful in reducing the suffering of your children and to reach for that much needed quality time with your partner. First, to communicate with your child. Do not assume that they are too young to understand. Let them know what you want and for how long. These usually give you a few days to digest the information. Explain that for a while, and that you always come back. It is important to do this, because the development of faith and trust you as a parent, they are up to date and a positive experience.

Second, try things as normal and familiar with your child to do the hold. So someone came into your house to the little ones, they were doing there. Try a babysitter that your child knows, trusts, how to find relatives or grandparents. If possible, try to keep your child with his / her siblings. And will be very useful to her favorite blanket, toys, etc. .. have this is a routine that your child is known and will be designed in a relaxed and comfortable.

Thirdly, always, ?Good Bye? to say to your child before leaving. This allows them to fully realize the transition you are going. This way you can prevent potential damage to the knowledge, lost that one. Some other things that can help is something for those who remember you, how to leave video, pictures or sound. This may be a comfort to know that some of you will be still there. Another technique is to allow your child to call the phone for your trip, just to check in with them and let them know that you are gone, but will return soon. This may help to think about the development of the car, that even if you do not have a physical, you still may be another way. This may be the peace that they adopt to hear from you and to lead. It can also sekalinya your routine, you know, they immediately returned.
