James Bond and FTP Lock do the same job, they work stealthily and undercover to combat cyber villains and protect the online world. Although Bond saved us all from one major cyber-criminal, his life of excitement, adrenaline and action is nothing compared to FTP Lock who stops villains every day. Last November, we introduced FTP Lock to encourage customers to protect their files against hackers and enhance security. One year later, we want to reinforce once again the importance of making good use of this facility for your own security.
FTP is used to transfer files from one place to another, it is the area where your files are saved and accessed on any given server. By leaving your FTP unlocked and/or open for an extended period of time you are increasingly vulnerable to attack and viruses.
It?s no surprise that the new James Bond villain is a high profile hacker because it reflects the risks associated with online security today. Every day, more stories emerge about online security; even large entities such as Twitter, Yahoo and LinkedIn have been threatened recently. Governments have been forced to focus on online criminal activity and in a recent interview Janet Napolitano, the US Secretary of Homeland Security stated the two areas of security that cause most concern are aviation and cyber. She said, ?The different styles and the sheer numerocity of attacks occurring via cyber now? It?s the fastest-growing area that we?re dealing with?.
So if James Bond, the US Government and major institutions have got Internet security high on their agenda, what can you and I do to protect ourselves?
Secure your FTP before the deadline
At Namesco, your security is our business. Our FTP Lock facility allows you to restrict your FTP access to specific ? ?safe? ? IP addresses and set specific periods of time when your FTP is open for ?upload? or ?download?. FTP is associated with each domain and user in your Online Control Panel. Wherever you have FTP enabled, the password is the same as your Email password. If you have not changed some or all of your passwords in the last 6 months, the risk to your online security is higher.? All customers who have left their FTP open to the ?least secure? setting will have their FTP ?locked? after the 19th November and they will need to log on to their Online Control Panel to unlock it in a more secure manner.
A little disruption for a lot of protection
We recognise this change will cause disruption for some of our customers and we apologise for any inconvenience in advance. Your security is our priority and forced password reset is common good practice; policies supporting such action are widely recommended. In the near future we will also introduce an automated mechanism to your Online Control Panel that requires you to periodically update passwords. We understand, changing passwords can be disruptive, but refreshing passwords is a simple yet effective way to ensure that your web hosting remains secure.
By making these changes, you will increase your online safety and help Bond and FTP Lock protect against internet villains and viruses!
